When people use too strong of lighting and improper camera settings it's easy to make a coin look cleaned. Looking the picture in the 2x2 it's easy to see the coin has not been cleaned.

I would say VF-30 details. I might have gone VF-25, but the ribbon end appears to have some ok detail, at least judging by the pic. I can't tell for sure, but I'm assuming the ribbon band is complete, if not maybe even a VF-20. It looks like a very old cleaning which has re-toned. Probably one from the 30's.
I imagine it would get slabbed and if it was priced as VG, you got a good deal even if you can't establish a die pair.

Didn't mean to get anuybody's knickers in a knot. I do think that there's a wee bit too much concern about circulated material that's been cleaned, especially since nearly all of it has been. Sandblasted or buffed at the local body shop is one thing, but this coin didn't have that appearance.
I knew somebody would say it was ... and stated exactly that in the first post, and included the 3rd picture as evidence that (I felt comfortable that) it had not been, but even in that picture some see it as "cleaned and retoning".
Fortunately, there are collectors for every grade of coin, or we'd all be fighting over an ever diminishing pile of coins.
I'm happy with it whatever the outcome, but I am going to send it to Rick on monday. I just can't trust my eyes anymore anyway.
For what it's worth, my opinion is just as justified as anybody else's. I won't back away from what I said. Some folks just see the boogie man everywhere. It's more a matter of whether you see the glass as half empty or half full. I tend to see mine as "half full"

Looks like a normal 1888.

Quote: I think we can put that "been cleaned" thing to bed though --I don't see any signs in the pic you took--you got a good coin for the money. As for the overdate, I had my doubts because the date position in relation to the point on the bust was different. Also the marker inside the top loop of the last 8 is missing--like the Cud, that's also on every one of ~25 known examples. Still...a good coin to check out, and you didn't lose anything by trying. I've done the same several times with this date.

I'll probably end up selling date rolls of 'em before we're through. There's a lot of weird stuff going on with that date. The one that I did put in my Wayte Raymond board has the last 8 quite deeply punched and the middle 2 are very weak....maybe grease I don't really know, but it's just one more anomally. There was no down side to the 1888 posted here, but last night I bought what appears to be an off center 1890 Indian head from a really fuzzy cell phone pic ... for 10 bucks. The picture is hideous. It was cheap though, so I decided to gamble on it. Looks like about 15 percent off, or just abused. That one has a down side, and I may be out 10 bucks. Heck, here's the picture. Talk about somebody whose glass is "half full"? Chance

Chancellor, that one really does seem like a gamble. That coin has to be at least an XF to be worth $10 and the picture really doesn't speak to that. It does indeed look to be off center, then you may have made a decent buy. Did you get it from someone who sells many coins? Such an individual would have the knowledge to disclose the fact the it was off center as that would increase the bids somewhat. If you got it from "some guy" you may get lucky, if you got it from a frequent coin seller, you probably got a VG in a distorted pic.

To my eyes, the 1890 looks like PMD...there's a ragged or clipped rim. I cannot be sure the cause, but it doesn't look OC.

On the off-center thing on this second one, I'm afraid I don't see it. I do think I see what appears to be a straight clip running along the rim at the 1:00-3:00 position. Then, again, I think I've seen better pictures of flying saucers, so you don't want to hold me to any of that.

The seller appears to be a female, and basically selling household kind of stuff and some old 45s. I can't see where she's ever sold a coin.
Of the 1890, the seller just says:
"This is a very nice coin an 1890 Indian Head,It is hard to tell much due to the lighting on this picture, however,it is very nice,Plain-I assume it has been circulated but it looks close enough to new.It has been well taken care of and in the family for over 70 years.Veryclear and worth the asking."
I already have a tracking number on that one, so we'll see soon enough what it is. If I threw away 10 bucks ... it wouldn't be the first time ... and won't be the last time.
It appears to cupped to me, as several off center specimens I have seen. Off centers aren't necessarily perfectly round. It will be fun to see what comes out of the package.

You're not going to get killed for $10. I think, on a seller-description like that, I'd take a chance, too. Do show us what it looks like when you get it, you've at least got my curiosity stirred.
