This coin arrived for me the other day. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) was established in 1921 and in 2011 celebrates its 90th anniversary. A special commemorative coin was minted by the South African mint to commemorate the occasion. The coin highlights various coins (as well as a banknote) that the South African Mint and the Reserve Bank have issued in the past. From left to right, the following coins are featured on the commemorative 5 Rand coin: 1. The image of St. George Slaying The Dragon By Benedetto Pistrucci -- as featured on the reverse of a South African gold sovereign. 2. The reverse of the bi-metallic 5 Rand coin that was minted in celebration of Nelson Mandela's 90th Birthday in 2008. 3. The reverse of the 2010 1oz gold 100 Rand Natura coin which depicts the White Rhinoceros. 4. The reverse of the 20 cent coin from South Africa's third decimal coin series - featuring the Kind Protea -- one of South Africa's national symbols. 5. The reverse of the South African farthing (1/4 Penny), in use from 1923 to 1960, which depicts two sparrows on a mimosa branch. The coin also features The 100 Pound banknote which was issued during the tender of Michiel Hendrik de Kock who was the third Governor of the South African Reserve Bank. Ken

I already imagine a nice display with this coin at the center and all the one represented on it around, and the bill under it :)

Interesting that you mention that the protea is a National Symbol of South Africa. Very closely related to the protea family is the waratah, which is the State Flower of New South Wales.

No, I was not aware of the State Flower of New South Wales.
Thanks for the information. Did they ever put the waratah on a coin?

Ken: The Australian Centenary of Federation 2001 20 cent commemorative depicts a watatah, superimposed over a map of N.S.W. 3.2 million were issued for circulation.
Can't get more depictive than that!

Well, the coin is new, so it depends ... MS = mint state - highly graded coins are expensive as they often get a few scratch (at least from the bag you have them in) PF = proof - those are specially minted coins, with special dies, and are often encapsulated or protected (hence their rating is often at the top) It then depends how much of each has been minted, if there were 100 proofs ... well it will be expensive.

Well, that depends on each one's opinion. I would go for the MS69 one, as I prefer normally circulating coins. But some prefer proofs, as they are done with special dies and have a very clean look (frosty on the high points, and smooth on the low points) If you can see both, pick whichever you prefer :) BTW, are those graded ? How much is a such coin sold ? (I have no clue, I just like its look) Upd. : ebay says between 7 and 11 bucks plus shipping for a non graded one.

They selling like mad in south africa going up to R10000 for a ms67 crazy! They say it will be worth over 5000% in the next year. And if Mandela dies it will be one of the most valued coins as it's the last in the Mandela range. The last coin 2008 just went for 2.8 million rand it was a pf69. So it's a great investment . I just bought the pf69 2011 cause I like the look. But I also bought the last mint bag of 400 I'm hoping to get graded but it's very expensive from south africa to send to America. I will send you one free if you cover the shipping. no problem .

Have an opportunity to buy a Grade MS-66 SARB R5 coin for a good price. Should I get it? I'm also not very informed about coins so an explanation about the MS-66 would be helpful. thanks
