how reliable is ICG gradeing in your oppinion? I have a chance to get a proof 70 Jefferson nickel at a good price..its a 1956 proof 70..looks good to me..but what about getting it crossed over to NGC or PCGS..it would be ok if it dropped 1 grade to 69..killer if it stayed a 70..never delt with ICG, dont know what to expect..
Rest in Peace

I'm always wary of 69 & 70 grades. A few years ago they were almost unheard of. Now they're commonplace. Just a lessening of standards to feed the market. I don't mess with them so I wish you good luck whatever you do.

I was unable to find a PCGS PR70 Jefferson older than 1977, anywhere in the PCGS Registry, although that's heavily weighted towards CAMs and DCAMs. The oldest non-Cam Proof I found on Heritage in a PCGS PR70 slab was 1963. A 1956 that PCGS was willing to give a PR70 would be a six-figure coin, I suspect.

That should be a hint about ICG grading of Moderns.

I like ICG, I have quite a few Lincolns in their slabs and they are accurately graded. I can't speak for other coins, but things get dicey for ALL the TPG's once you get to the 68-70 level. Nonetheless, I like ICG and they are often the "forgotten" legit TPG.

I also like ICG...alot. I also agree they are the smallest of the "legit" TPG'S. All of my ICG coins, I believe are accurately graded. When I first bought some of my "ICG" coins , all of them crossed. Maybe I was just lucky.
ICG has always had a rep for being liberal with moderns. I don't necessarily collect moderns, but common-sense dictates that the minting processes should have become more refined overtime and you should see a higher population of higher end MS coins. BUT PCGS and NGC are the accepted authoritative TPG's out there.

They are usually off a few grades, but I love buying them cause I buy the Coin not the holder. So sometimes I get accurately graded coins at an assumed "ICG" discount.

As dom said. I consider ICG quite capable, just a little enthusiastic with Moderns. I'd buy a Classic in an ICG slab any day of the week.
