What is common to find in a box/bag of dimes, in regard to silver? I haven't gone through a bag of dimes in a long time, but picked one up at work last week and came up with 2 common date silvers (1961-d & 1964-d). Is this pretty standard with dimes? Honestly to me any day you find any silver is a good day. Edited by Rewster 09/05/2011 12:49 am

Probably averaged 1 per box over my searching the last few yrs. After I put a decent clad set together, I found it more economical to work more to afford silver.

I gave up on dimes because halves produce more (assuming you do enough volume) but when I searched a box a week for ~8 months, I was averaging 1.5 silver dimes per box. I also found 3 mercs and a barber before I quit.

I average about 3 dimes per box my most was 5 silver dimes my least was 0 silver dimes I only got skunked in boxes that were brand new dimes, every time they are mixed dates I find stuff They have become my favorite thing to search. Also look for the 1982 no P dime. I am still on the hunt for this one

Best: 7 silver in a box. Worst: 0 silver in a box.
23 boxes completed so far and I have 34 silver. that is 1.47 silver per box.

seems to be getting fewer and fewer for me. I recently had a skunk streak of 14 straight boxes and they were not new coins. I probably avg 1 per every box or two.

I get 1-2 per box. About 1/7th of those are Mercury dimes. I just finished a box with 4 silver FDR, but I get skunked regularly too.

I've found 111 silver dimes this year, having searched $12,500 in hand-rolls. That's one per $112 searched. Box scores for me average a little less. In that amount, I've found 8 mercs and 12 silver canadians. I agree with the poster that said it's easier to buy silver outright. I'm surely not in this for financial gain, it's just that I truly love the hobby.

Probably cheaper and easier to buy silver, however I love the hobby as well. It gives me something to do and I like the fact that I found them in circulation.

We might find 1 in a box. I have been finding more Canadian ones lately however.

For the time invested, it's easier to "strike it rich" with a second job than it is to "strike it rich" with pocket change or roll hunting. But a second job isn't as fun.

Or even a first job, for that matter...

Quote: I like the fact that I found them in circulation. That is spot on for me. There is something so satisfying about finding silver or anything you are looking for in circulation. Thanks to all for the information.
