Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum but have been collecting for a while. One of the September 11 commemorative medals that I recently received seems to be an error coin, and I was just wondering what people's thoughts about it are, or what type of error it might be? The error makes it look as if the eagle has been shot just below its wing.

I didn't want to take up too much space with this post by uploading too many images, so I'm attaching one picture here plus a link to a page where you can see the coin in much more detail.

Thanks for any ideas about its significance, rarity, value, etc.

Follow this link to see additional photographs in much greater detail.

That poor bird sure does look like it got shot. I am no expert so I can't tell you what kind of error it is. I'll be interested to see what the experts have to say.

There are two possibilities.

1) It was damaged by some sort of mishandling at the mint.
2) It's a struck-through error - some sort of debris got between the die and the planchet when it was being struck.

I lean toward #2 because I don't see any obvious signs of damage.

Where is the dot in relation to the exact center of the medal?

I marked the center of the coin with a blue dot, so you can see where the hole is in relation to the center. The hole is slightly to the left of, and below, the center of the coin. (I also added a larger version of this picture on the page linked in my original post.)

Ok, that location disproved the potential theory I had. I have seen some coins with a center dot that is a remnant of the reduction lathe process but since your dot is not at perfect center, that explanation is not possible. Most likely explanation is that your medal was struck through unknown foreign material. It appears that there may be a small black speck inside of the dot. If so, then your medal would have been struck through press gunk(a conglomeration of grease and metal dust) and a little bit of it remains. BTW, your macro photos are excellent and go a long way in disproving damage to the medal itself.

Thanks for the insight on the medal, and I'm glad the pictures were helpful. I appreciate the comments about the photos. I've dabbled in photography but am far from an expert. Like coin collecting, it's an enjoyable hobby and they go well together.

Thanks again.
