i am seeing 1889.
I dont know US coins too well but thats what I am seeing.

The final year for the shield nuckel was 1883. I suspect that's a 3 and not a 9.

I know it looks like a 9, but that would be impossible; they stopped minting Shield nickels in 1883. Could be a damaged 0 or even a 2.

According to this article, that's a damaged 1882. The logotype was different for 1883 and the digits of the date spaced further apart.
