I had my eye on a slabbed 1863-S half eagle coin a few weeks ago but couldn't close the deal. I was able to pick up this coin at a fair price. It's not as scarce as the '63-S but still not a date you see with any frequency.

How do you think NGC graded it?

I would say it is a fine grade.

I would guess they gave it F-12.

I don't see this one making XF, so my guess will be VF details.

NGC called this VF-30. I agree with several posters that is a bit optimistic. I think VF-20 would be more appropriate and would not have been shocked to see it in a F-15 holder.

On the plus side, I don't think the coin has been significantly cleaned and the color looks good. I'm pleased with my purchase. Thanks for your comments!
