I'm assuming I have a micro S in the 2x2 (bottom coin) Does anyone know the estimated population of the micro S?

PCGS estimates 31,500 micro S compared to 50,000 standard S

But those numbers seem awfully low!

I have a number of both, so I think the best way to interpret is to say one is not incredibly more rare than the other (although I suppose it's almost 2:1)

I don't know the actual numbers but the micro S has been known for a long time. Obviously, there are less of the micro S than the regular S but not too much less. I think the price is also higher because people look for these coins. They are not hard to find at all.

In "The Complete Guide to Mercury dimes Second Edition", the author references another person who handled over 160,000 dimes over a period of 7 years. It was reported that 776 dimes were the regular S and only 75 dimes were the micro S. This is about 10% of the total.

I doubt anyone really knows the answer to that one but just are guessing based on what has been seen. Also, note that only lately more and more large and small mint marks are being found. There are both for the 28S, 34D, 41S so far. Possibly many more exist but people just don't notify anyone that they found them. I've seen several that I suspect are smaller than normal but as with others, sort of ignored that possibility.
Would be nice is someone could sit down with thousands of them and search for large and small Mint Marks. Would have even been better if the USMint kept better records.
