Although most of my coins are in the safety deposit box I enjoy a nice slideshow from time to time. Anyone else enjoy the photos on your computer as much as reviewing the real thing?

I collect coins that have circulated from all cultures, all centuries, ancient to modern. I have over 3000 coins.

Such a collection demands constant review, just to remember what coins I have, and where to find them. Classification into groups is difficult, except on a time line. Such a collection also demands research into cultures and histories, so my learning curve is always very steep.

That is where the enjoyment comes from.

I never stop learning. I also have a library of about 200 coin books and monographs and a supporting library of over 1000 books on history, culture and art. All of these books are complimentry to each other, and to the coin collection.

A very good question! I don't have a huge collection, maybe 100 total, with both circulated and mint-purchased examples. I personally have to have them in hand; touch and feel is everything, looking at pics doesn't cut it, too inventory-like.

I love spending a day going through all of my coins and learning new things about each one.

I'm slowly becoming just the opposite. I've been collecting coins for well over 60 years now and have now an extensive quantity of coins. Over 100 Albums almost all full. 5 safe deposit boxes for them all. To photo them all would take the rest of my life with that many coins but probably should photo the better ones. My biggest problem is never selling or getting rid of any coins in the collection creating an extensive quantity of coins. Sometimes so many I have forgotten what I have, need or want anymore.
I've wondered at times what it would be like to sell all and start over. That would make it easier to photo them all.

just carl,

Those 5 safety deposit boxes must of weight a ton, need a fork lift to bring them out.

I sold some of mine a while back, and is harder to find quality coins, also prices hasn't come down that much in my area.

My collection is huge, probably 1500 coins (give or take 100) and I find new ones everytime I roll search. Most of it was a inheritance so I only bought about 10%.

I got back into coin collecting a few months ago after 20 years off and I get out my sets of SLQ's every night when I get off of work.

The whole reason I got back into coin collecting was I had spent every dollar I made for the last year and a half paying off my houses (which are out of state and I don't get to them but once a year) and the building materials on the Home Depot card fixing them up.

I told myself I need to spend some money now on something that I can feel and touch before I have a breakdown to justify going to work everyday otherwise why go.

I also rounded the coins I had collected as a kid and put them in my type set and picked up most of the missing ones to fill the holes (only 5 more to go)

It is bad enough that I have to look at and touch my coins through 2x2s, I don't think a picture would ever do!

I am about to sit down and take macro shots of all my good coins.
I was going to make them into a slide show, but there is noting like feeling and having it in hand.
I dont have many US coinage so the ones I do have I like to touch and hold.
maily getting photos for this site and for insurance.

I have been in the process of scanning all my main coin collection into a computer image file and it has been fun to revisit each coin and examine the image blown up full screen size. Amazing what I have found that was missed when I acquired the coins years ago (or maybe forgotten due to age would be closer to the truth). I enjoy the images because I also keep all my coins in safe deposit boxes at the bank.

just carl: Ok to dispose of part or all of your collection. I have done that twice in my lifetime, and now have built a substantial third collection.

Just NEVER sell any of your books.

So far just couln't do that. I've got the first coins I ever got and the same with coin books. I'm just one of those people that should but doesn't.

I have scanned all my coins and created a great database but there's nothing better than 'hands on' with the coins. I also broke all my graded coins out of the holders as I don't expect to sell them. I only sell a few to support my buying habit. Those bust halfs and old copper cents don't come cheap!

As most of my coins are tucked away safely all the time, pictures sure are the best way to enjoy them. I keep a full gallery of all my coins online, so I can check if I have a coin, no matter where I am. I can also enjoy viewing them at any time.
