A friend sent me a group of 6 foreign coins to see if they were of any value. They all have Krause book prices of $0.15 or less.

Except for a 1959 Peruvian 20 Centavo struck in brass. I looked it up and there are two versions with and without AFT.

I initially presumed AFT must be designer initials - but there are NO INITIALS anywhere on the coin.

So I have a few questions.

1. What is the AFT?
2. Where is it located?
3. What would one be worth since there is no price in my Krause?

Any help from a collector familiar with Peru would be appreciated.

It's "AFP", not "AFT".

Looking at this example on WCG, there's a clearly visible "AFP" incuse on the bust truncation (which are indeed presumably the designer's initials). I assume if it's missing, then it's a "no AFP" variety.

Looking a few years earlier at KM# 221.2, 38th Ed. Krause lists it as "AFP on truncation" so I assume the designer initials(?) should be at the base of the neck for later issues as well.

Thanks SAP - I pulled out my microscope and there is no trace of damage at that point and there are NO initials so the only remaining question is whether a value can be placed on the variety.
