I'm looking for a "Gloria Romanorvm" holding standard/globe type, and I found two that I happen to like but can't decide which one I want. Theodosius AE3 Theodosius AE2 Thanks! Edited by VisigothKing 09/29/2011 3:16 pm

If these are the only two you have to choose from I would pick the first.

Yeah, I saw some others, but I narrowed it down based on appearance, price etc. and I came down to these two.

I would go for the first one as well.

I guess it depends on how much each costs. They both have good and bad points. Two questions: 1. I can't make out the obverse legend. Who's coinage is this? 2. How much are you having to pay? I have seen a lot of "Gloria Romanorvm" coins on ebay. A lot depends on who the Emperor may be. JW

They're both Theodosius I, and the first is $16.50 shipped, and the second is $23 shipped I think.

Are you looking for a Theodosius I or just any "Gloria Romanorvm"? Unless you are looking to plug a hole, I think the price on both pieces are too high. As an example, I have a VALENTINIAN I from the mint at Antiochia I paid $5.77 for earlier this year: I also have two others, one from Nicomedia and the other from Siscia, I paid around $10. But, hey, if this is what you need/want, go for it. I suppose I'd go for the first, but my initial reaction was the second. Good luck JW

I'm looking for any Gloria Romanorvm as long as it's just the emperor holding the standard and globe (no dragging captive - I already have one). Arcadius, Theodosius, and Honorius are the ones I can think of with this type.

Sorry about not understanding. But again, I think the price is too high. I have an Arcadius and a Honorius of this type I paid $4.25 for each plus shipping. Both purchased this year. I don't have a Theodosius I of this type so possibly the price may be somewhat higher. I just don't know that for a fact. But the prices you are quoting just seem inflated to me, even though I just checked ebay and for the few they showed your prices are average. JW

I do agree that the prices are a bit high for my liking, but mainly I like the first one, and there is a chance that it looks better in hand to justify the price, because the pics aren't the best and are a bit grainy.

Yeah, I'm basically want it because I like the design and I don't happen to have it yet. And the only reason why I considered the second one was because more of the legends were visible, but the first one I like better; it's more detailed and has a better overall look. Thanks everyone for your opinions. I'll be buying this one first thing in the morning.

Both nice coins. The first being very nice.
I checked on vcoins and ones in that condition are marked at 60, 80 and up. So I wouldn't be surprised if that coin goes up a bit. However there are a few nice ones there for around 25 to 30. It's all in what you want to spend.
I think JW's point is correct.......sometimes you can get a surprising deal patiently watching an auction. At least I think that's his point.
