Sorry, this is the best image I have.

The hair makes me think this is a 1916, the 1917 has a split hair out the back, and +1918 have a different hair style all together. Please, give me peace! How can I be sure this is a 1917 aside from the strong rivets on the shield?

Well, unfortunately, in my opinion there is no way a 1916 SLQ in that condition would have shield rivets that thoroughly struck. So it would be out for me just on that. The hair is too worn to be an indicator, the arm gown is too worn to be an indicator, and the gown by the leg is worn but kind of looks 1917 to me. Other than that, I don't know of any way to discern the two. It's a 1917.

Looks like a 1917 T1. It is pretty hard to use the hair indicator when the coin gets worn. I find the base of the gown as the best indicator on very worn coins. The 1917s are a bit more curved at the base and have a little more space between the gown and the foot. When I see one that is a tough call between the two dress wise I look at the shield. If I see strong rivets on the upper right section of the shield I call it a 1917. But since it is theoretically possible that you could see the rivets on a 1916 I prefer to use the gown as the primary feature.

Here's a good thread on the subject:

The rivets tell the story 1917-T1.

Johnny is an expert at this, but he is not on the Forum too much at the present time due to his Fathers passing.

Hopefully that is not the coin from this auction

Looks like someone unsuccessfully tried nic a date on yours. Here's one that someone tried some good stuff on that brought the date back but wreaked havoc on the coin. I have a 1918-S that someone also tried something similar on.

I cannot believe someone paid that much to take a chance on that coin. That's crazy. The seller isn't exactly a big time trustworthy one either. If you have that coin and it's real and original, you should be able to take a better pic.

Then again, if the date is at all discernible, it's probably at least a G-4 and $1000 would be a real bargain.
Rest in Peace

Yeah, I think if you had a really good closeup, the second bit of hair could be visible.

Dateless 1916s are still out there in personal collections and even in dealer/pawn shop junk bins because most can't accurately identify them.

Ricardo, I don't know what you're talking about.

Frankly I'd be better off re-selling some of the better deals that I run into and just saving up for one...but that takes all the fun out of the hunt, doesn't it? ;)
