I was just hoping to get an idea of what to expect. The website simply says free admission, exhibits and free appraisals.

That is the kind of post that has been discussed many times. For that I suggest using the Search tab for coin shows. Lots of people have posted what they found, how they did, what they spent and on and on for coin shows.
Usualll the best thing to do is just go there and then you too could be giving out information.
Rest in Peace

At my first coin show I just went to look, but I did bring some spending money ...and I spent some of it. I just walked around the whole thing.

I brought an Indian Head penny to show to the dealers -- they will be the ones doing the free grading. I showed it to a few who weren't busy and they all gave it a VF grade. One dealer talked to me about what I was collecting and when I said I was a newbie he sent me to another dealer to get the Red Book -- which I did.

Then just as I was coming up on the last few tables I saw something shiny and I bought it -- on impulse. It wasn't even a coin -- just a souvenier from the Chicago Columbian Exhibition which my great-grandfather helped to build.

So bring a coin to have graded if you want, and bring a little spending money collect business cards, and have fun.

I have been to some small coin shows, and what I've seen most of are old men selling a lot of unattractive coins.

What I see none of at coin shows are female coin collectors. Why is that?

Why that is simple. For some strange reason females seam to think that washing cloths, house cleaning, raising kids, doing dishes, shopping for food and clothing and all that silly stuff is more important than gun shows, knife shows, coin shows, camera shows. Just goes to show you females have a poor sence of importance and priorities.
And as long as my wife doesn't read this, I'll still be here tomorrow.
On a ssrious note, this is mainly due to where you go for those shows. There are actually many females interested in this hobby but they really don't like going to coin shows due to, as you mentioned, mostly full of old men.
By me this lack of females at coin shows is slowing being corrected due to some sellers selling jewlery or other female interesting items. Once at a show, they start to wonder around and some actually become coin collectors.
Unfortunately most hobbies are sort of customer gender related in interest. Examples are you see men more at coin, knife, camera, gun, car shows. You see more women at dog, cat, kniting, clothing, furnature, antique shows.
You could do your part by attempting to take a female to the next coin show and see what response you get.

Female coin collector here! *waves*

I have been to one coin show and it was a bit awkward, but I would definitely go again. It seemed that the only other women there were middle-aged. I am 25. I stuck out like a sore thumb, but felt ignored because of my age and gender.

The main reason it was awkward, though, is because I couldn't really browse like you can at an antique store. Coins are small and not visible from a distance, often they are kept in binders and not on display, I had a long list of what I coins I needed for my collection, and there were about 100 vendors.

So, for example, I wanted to buy some Presidential dollars. I couldn't very well go up to each vendor, ask if they have Pres dollars, look at them, price them, and compare them to all the other vendors' coins. I didn't want to end up paying more if another vendor had them for less. Truthfully, I think ebay is easier. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

Sure you can. I always take at least one tour around the floor before making a purchase. Do not be afraid to let them know you are looking around; many dealers are competitive and will give discounts to make the sale.

I'm a woman and I drag my husband to the shows and the club meetings. Okay, he is sort of interested but I'm hooked on it.

lizzyjo -- (sigh) I am middle-aged (56) but I would be happy to see more women at my local club meetings. One guy there brings his wife. There's one other woman and she's older than I am...(sigh). But it doesn't seem to matter about age and gender once we start talking about the coins. I would love to see families there...and families at the coin shows.

I try to get my neice and nephew to go with me but I get blank stares. (yet another sigh)

Just the opposite. I tend to ask every dealer if they have a certain coin but just not here. I also tell many dealers I'm looking for a something or other and could they also watch for one for me.
You would find that asking every or almost every dealer something gets you into their world more than you think. This also usually means they will remember you more and your chances of better deals also improve.
