Hi All - I have had this 1802 LC for a while now and just can't wrap my head around what's going on with it. There are three areas which have oddities. Two of them I believe are just die cracks...but the last I don't get. Let's call the A, B and C.
'A' is the die crack running which parallels the rim and runs across the tops of the letters ERIC and then heads toward the rim just above the last A in AMERICA. This is really only visible in one pic, the one with the items circled in red. I am convinced this is a die crack.
'B' is also a die crack, starting at the end of the left stem and terminating in the you of UNITED.
So for 'A' & 'B' the cracks are raised above the surface of the coin, which is what I'd expect for a crack.
NOW, 'C' is what's confusing me. This is the long "crack" that originates in the rim above the E in STATES, heads SE/S until it vanishes under a leaf. What is odd is, 'C' is a depression in the surface, like a scratch, however it appears to have left the mint that way, not
PMD. The "scratch" or "groove" or "channel" runs UNDERNEATH the leafs and letters it bisects. A
PMD scratch would be on top of those devices...?!?
Anyone who can explain 'C' is my hero. I've shown this to several shop owners who have scratched their heads and gone "huh."
Anyone? I love this coin but want to know more about the 'C' oddity.
Thanks! --- Matthew
