Found this roll searching. I did weigh it and it is copper. What caused this?

I would say PMD or someone deliberately did this, nothing in me says the coin left the mint this way. It almost appears as though someone rubbed away the original number 198X and placed the 1 there - maybe this was a test coin for someone trying to create fakes...?

This is simple damage from a Coin Wrapping Machine. Very common.

No need to weigh a 1981 cent - all of them are brass/bronze composition. They didn't change to zinc cents until mid-year in 1982.

yeah I can sorta notice where the 1 was pushed at an angle. Its just hard to believe that it was done so cleanly, without damaging the 1. I would think it would atleast shear off. I'll be keeping this PMD coin cause its kinda cool.

I weighed it to confirm it was a 1981.

The one also looks thinner and shorter than what it should be...wondering if this is a 1980 that someone tried to turn into an 1981 before they were released.

Umm, no...it's exactly what I said it was. I've seen literally hundreds of similar damaged coins.

The easy way to tell it was disturbed by a coin wrapper is that the area affected is pushed parallel to the rim. Just a damaged coin.
