Hello everyone,

I have a very nice coin case: http://www.lighthouse.us/epages/lig...Products/KOS
... and I'm wondering if it's generally acceptable to remove a new coin from its packaging (or bar) and keep it nicely in a case like this?

Thank you very much guys!

So far I've removed every coin in a slab, package or whatever they were in for my Albums. I'm an Album person so all go in those.

to CCF!

The case is a nice idea but not what I would use. The 2 big down falls I see are;

1- You are limited to a limited amount spots for the diameter of the coin.

2- The amount of room these openings have allow the coins to move around when the case is carried by the handle.

I & others here recommend Dansco, But you do have a few die hard Whittman Lovers.

If your collection is alot of assorted coin, you could use a 3 ring binder, 2x2 flips & pages.

Well, you could do whatever you want with your coins. I always think moving proof coins around is risky because their luster changes so easily. An UNC gold coin wouldn't change or tarnish in a case like that so you'd be good to go. Part of that is just because gold doesn't tarnish easily in general.

On a side note, that case you showed in the picture doesn't really look that nice to me. I was expecting to see one of those mahogany display cases, but looks like a suitcase with a couple trays in it. Any ASE or other country's gold coins come in nicer packaging than that in my opinion.

As far as bars go....I don't see how any bar is gonna fit into those slots.

Well brilliant idea! A better and nicer case would be a fantastic compliment to my coins.
And thank you everyone that has replied above!

In terms of "ruining" the coin, unless it is a rarity, the premium that the gold has will stay relatively steady while the price of gold fluctuates.

There is no collector value in gold bars, Only intrinsic value.
Scratch them all you like and they will still have the same value as a pristine bar.
I have silver ignots that I just chuck into an empty plastic ice container.
But with coins , I tend to store them with far more care

If the coins are numismatic items or become so eventually, instead of just merely bullion items, that is not a bad case to store them in. If you wish to keep the coins as pristine as the day they were minted, you can remove and discard the packaging if you so desire, but I would highly suggest encapsulating the coin in a Lighthouse branded capsule so the metal does not come in contact with the flocked velvet portion of the tray. The velvet itself may be harmless, however the tray is constructed underneath, there may be solvents that are slowly released over time, and the WILL tone an unencapsulated coin. Thus the capsule is an inexpensive addition to the case. The downside is that it will reduce the number of coins as well as possibly preventing your largest coins from fitting inside a tray. If you can buy Air-Tite products in NZ, that would be a good choice also. They make a four drawer box out of wood that costs about $80 US, and offer quite a few foam/velvet configurations for storing different sized coins in their branded holders. Hope this helps.
