One word reply: "WOW"... Let's get Nickel Searcher into this thread! Gorgeous coins and a wonderful start with only 46 more to go (unless you have others too).

Very VERY nice examples. A 66+ Vancouver would only be available for me in a dream. I am glad to have another commemorative collector able to show his prizes for all to see.

I like the photo configuration. Did you bust these out of their slabs to get the label as such? Or some creative photoshopping/overlapping? I am not referring to the color, they are real beauties!

Excellent coins PeaceBD and I am absolutely thrilled to see you sharing the photos here for all of us to enjoy.

Your initial selection of lovely ... and expensive ... coins to share leads me to believe that you have some expertise in the series ... and need no instruction from any of us ... soooo ... I'll just a bit if you do not mind.

Your 1925 Fort Vancouver is the nicest example I have ever seen ... I'm personally not a big fan of toned silver coins ... but I would take that lovely any day as an upgrade to my set.

I'm wondering how far you have come with the set ... are you in search of the 50-coin type set ... or are you after all 144 coins?

It's always great to have a new enthusiast share some Classic Commemorative ... there are alas too few of us who are interested ... and able ... to work on acquiring these wonderful works of art and history.

Tell us how far you are along in your goals ... and by all means please share more photos of these coins!

Thanks for the photos ... hoping to see more.

David

Thanks a lot everyone for all the nice comments. I will update this thread as I add to my collection.

@oih82w8,the pictures where done using Photoshop.

@David, I have been following your collection of commemorative halves here and have been a secret admirer.I have been reading all the Commemorative books I can get my hands on and seeing as many as I can lay my hands on. But in our hobby there is always room for more learning. So please don't hold back any advice.
Thanks for the compliments on the Vancouver half.I have a long way to go in my collection. These are just 4. I have an ungraded Texas, Stone mountain and a MS 66 San Diego which I do not consider a part of this collection. I would like to assemble a 50 piece set first and then move on to the 144.

Wondering why you feel that way? Please elaborate on that. Most of us would be proud to own those three coins!

Hmmm ... some advice ... advice is always tough because every collector's goals and financial means are so different ... what works for one is not working for another.

Rather than offering advice ... I will honestly share some experiences and painful learning's gained from my personal pursuit of this set ... and allow you to take from them whatever you feel applies to your situation.

First ... I wish that I had decided at the beginning of my pursuit of the 50 coin type set on the grade and quality standards for my set. I purchased many coins that at the time I was happy with ... but over time my standards increased and I was compelled to sell the lesser coins (often at a loss) while in the pursuit of a 'better' coin.

This is the absolute best 'lesson learned' I can impart ... if you know up front what you want when you get to the end ... and hold out for that goal ... you will save yourself a lot of money and hassle!

Second ... I wish I had not purchased raw coins while in pursuit of a high-grade PCGS set. While a newbie at the set I purchased many raw coins that I spent serious $ to purchase and then with PCGS to certify ... and many came back with the dreaded 'genuine' label or a lower MS grade than I wanted ... all of which I sold at a loss.

Third ... I have have decided to include only PCGS/CAC approved coins in my final set ... there is surely a legitimate debate about the value/need for CAC approval ... but at the end of the day the market rules and I say 10 years from now CAC approved coins will for sure command a premium.

BTW ... Refer to #1 ... this late in the game decision has cost me some $ again in upgrades!

Fourth ... I learned to value these coins based not on the known references (PCGS price guide, CDN, Numismedia, etc) but on real world sales for similar quality coins. Check E-Bay, Heritage, Teletrade, etc.

PCGS/CAC coins with nice eye appeal are always going to command a premium ... and I am willing to pay it for the right coin for my set.

I say your lovely MS66+/CAC Vancouver is exactly what I am writing about.

Bottom line PeaceBD ... choose for yourself how to pursue the set ... it is indeed a tough set to finish ...

You are off to a fabulous start so far with the four coins you have shown ... lovely and desirable examples indeed ... Wishing for you the best in the pursuit ... and looking forward to any updates you choose fit to provide.

David, I am sorry for this late reply. I have been caught up in work this few weeks. I think your advice/experience would provide great learning points for someone like me starting out to build this set. I am aiming to build this set in PCGS/CAC in 66 /67/68 grade where ever possible. For some like the Hawaii, Missouri and Grant (Star) I might have to settle for a 65 but you never know.
The urge to by a lower grade coin say in 65 Grade but with an eye appeal is great and hard to resist. I experienced this at the weekend coin show in town. I bought a 1936 Cleveland Half in NGC MS65 even though I will get a MS67 in PCGS/CAC later for this set.

The Texas and Stone Mountain were bought about 6 years ago when I was a beginner. I have posted pictures of these before. San Diego was my first and hopefully last mistake purchase from Heritage. The coin is decent but I don't like the toning patch on the knee of Minerva.

The reason I do not consider these to be part of my Commem set is because I will be including coins with only eye appeal and character in this set.

PeaceBD those are some very nice earlies! When I first started the only pictures of these I had seen was the ones in the RedBook, and I was not impressed. However, several years later and after seeing others post pictures like yours I have found that many are quite lovely. RedBook needs to use pictures like yours!

Appears from your reply BD that you have established clear goals for the set and that is what I wish I did when I started.

You do of course realize that once complete at this grade level this will be a $150,000+ set ...

I look forward to all your future additions and will add whatever commentary I can to any coins/questions you post.

Coinut that is the best compliment I have received on the pictures so far. Thanks a lot.
