I was looking around on ebay and saw a listing for a 1928s SLQ which the seller himself is grading F-VF. With 3hrs to go bidding is up to $90! On top of everything else the image was clearly made from a scanner.

Shouldn't this coin be going for under $20? Had it been a 1927S I'd think it was reasonable, but a 1928S?

I agree, this should be a $20 coin at best; I've found examples almost as good recently in a dealer's generic SLQ box for $8. I don't see any special features that would merit the high bid, unless it's a contemporary counterfeit or something weird like that.

Who can offer an explanation for the bidding war on this coin?

The CPG lists an inverted mintmark variety with a 2x premium and an RPM with a 5x premium but the provided picture is much to small to make a determination for either one. All of the bids over $10 were by two individuals so maybe the thought they were fighting it out over a 1927-S

Perhaps, they thought that this coin was an altered date 1923-S ?

Perhaps one or both were shill bidders and were hoping to snag a bid from an unsuspecting collector who didn't do his/her homework as to value.

well, we can watch his other auctions to see if that trend continues...to see if there is shilling going on. Sure seems fishy to me as well. And I have a 28's in au that i'll sell you for $70, Saruma!
Rest in Peace

One bidder has a 292 positive feedback and the other has a 531. Either they saw something no one else does or have lost a ton of money over the years.

I think I may save that seller to watch what happens on his other auctions. The shill bidding idea is an interesting one which could explain it. Pretty lousy shills though. You shill bid to get the item at the top of its realistic value, not to so vastly overbid that no one in their right mind would pay it.
