Noob here,
Just joined CCF. These is a lot of knowledge on here and have enjoyed reading the past few days.I have inherited a collection and am working on different books, primarily smaller up to 25c's. There is not too much where I'm located and found this store, only about an hour away. Has anyone ever dealt with them before. Have never bought off ebay before and am really hesitant to do so. I don't mind driving up to 3 hours but just cannot find many around me. I'm in North florida between Tallahassee and Jacksonville. I have visited 2 that seem to sell for much more than Red Book and want to buy for 20% of Red Book. Sorry if I'm in the wrong section. Thanks for your help

Hi Noob,

Welcome aboard. The seller you cite has a wide variety of offerings, and judging from the number of sales and active bidding, his/her store looks fine to this oldtimer. You might want to check out coin show and club listings in surrounding areas. You're wise to be cautious, avoid impulse buying and seek the advice of other collectors. IMHO, it's good to set some collecting goals and concentrate on one, preferred series at a time. And, invest in, borrow, books, too!

Thank you Exoguy. I have bought a few books, as well as reading as much as I can off CCF. We inherited different bags of Dimes (Barber,Mercury,Roosies), Quarters (Liberty,Wash), Nickels (Huge amount of Jeff.)and 1 bag of halves (Franklin,Liberty). There was one other bag of mixes (Capped Bust, 20 cents and others). This bag is what we have really enjoyed learning with. I had never seen the Capped Bust halves before and want to start working on those. I'll post pictures over time as we get books together. I'd say 95% of what we have was taken out of circ. by my grandfather so we have quite a few books we are working on. Thanks

The early halves are among my favorites. I suggest that you form a lineup of the halves you have by grade, lowest to highest. Study a grading guide and see which has the best eye appeal for you. A well-matched set, by grade, is one that you can take pride in assembling. Personally, I'd give some thought to selling off the common silver so as to use that money to purchase an 1815/12 when one presents itself. That's the most formidable coin in the series.

I really have been focused on the Capped Halves. I had never seen this coin until we opened everything and I'm just fascinated by them. We have 1811, 32, and 33 from the bags. They seem to me around 20 to 40 in grade. I've already bought a few from 2 stores that I know I paid a steep premium for but couldn't help myself. I will have more patience in the future. We have a lot of rolls of Mercs and Roosie's that I'm going through to sell for silver. We will be selling silver but the pricing I got from near here is less than half of what I've seen on ebay. I'll post more on that later. We're thankful for everything since our work has dried up lately, but will still work on the collections.

I think ExoGuy has some good advice here. Liquidate the duplicates and/or coins that are not in great shape to fund future purchases. I sold some duplicate Franklin halfs and duplicate silver Roosevelt dimes on ebay and was very happy with what I got for them.

We have a lot of rolls of Mercury dimes, I know the key dates and mints but should these be sold as "junk silver"? I just hate selling something that old for "melt". What is your opinion?

Alot of 90% "junk silver"(common avg circ coins) is sold in face value bags that trade for multiples of face value depending on spot silver prices, currently ~22-24x face value.

Most collectors whom I've encountered will pay a modest premium for the Mercuries, Walkers and and older obsolete silver coins. You may want to sort these by condition, too, bundling the XF-AU's. Do keep a close eye open for the 1942/1 P+D overdates! They can slip by even the most astute collector.

You may also want to set aside some Franklins, like the 1955, 1956 and 1952-S and/or better grades for example.

Look out for the the 1943/2 silver nickels, too! My personal preference would be to sell off the silver nickels, the 40% halves, the Roosey's, the '64 Kennedy's, the Washington's and the Franklin's in general while silver's up. Holding back the older silver, perhaps? Happy hunting!

My advice:

Educate yourself about any coin type first before any selling! KNOW what you have & the price you want for any coin before you start trying to sell anything! You'll be VERY happy later that you did!

vBiokemist6, I'd like to know is that a store or ebay selling @ 22/24x face. I checked with 2 stores Thurs. and they said 15x face. I realize there will much more of a premium on ebay, but THAT much?
Exoguy, we have a lot of War Nickels which I also asked at the stores and they will buy at .50c a piece. I didn't sell anything to either store just based on what I had read here previously.
Thanks to all for the advice as well.

You were wise to not sell at that price. Of course, stores have overhead, but reputable dealers work on a smaller margin, dealing in volume. Bear in mind that the top prices are typically paid for investor lots of $1,000 or more. Dealers do sometimes pay more for smaller lots if they need to fill an order. The dealers in your area may not be turning their purchases quick enough to stave off a downturn in the market.

Is that a buy or sell price? If it is a sell price, purchase all you can as it is really cheap! Spot value for circ silver @$30/oz is 21.45x face value with the assumption that circ silver is 0.715oz/$1 face. If that is a buy price, you should be able to do much better than that, at least 18x face.

To answer your specific question about this seller - I've bought from them several times and find them reputable. Of course I deal with ebay sellers one transaction at a time.

Same here with the seller in question. I've bought a few things from them and most were excellent buys. There is a little bit of a chance of getting a cleaned coin though, but they do have an acceptable return policy...
