I need some help. I bought a 1838 "Coronet Hair" Large cent but I'm confused. I have a few pictures below to explain.

I know that this is a Coronet (1816 - 1839)

Large-Cent-Question.-Braided-Or-Coronet?

and I know this is a Braided (1839-1857)

Large-Cent-Question.-Braided-Or-Coronet?

But what is this?

It was advertised as a Coronet Hair and the date matches. But the beads in the hair looks like the Braided Hair. Please help.

Thanks in advance.

Look at the hair at the bottom of the neck. Coronet is shorter, braided is more elongated

I did notice that, but it's the beads in the hair that threw me off. I thought the beads were only on the braided hear?

1835-1839 coronets are known as a "transitional" design...you can read about it in the history section of the site...your coin is correct design for the date and is identified as a Coronet.

Aha, that makes sense. (no pun intended)

Thank you. I did find a 1837 Coronet with the beads too.

Thanks. =)
