I have some coins that I would like to send for grading to PCGS from Canada. Have people on the site had much experience with this? Has anyone had trouble with customs on either side trying to charge taxes? Has anyone ever had any coins go missing?

I would see about submitting through an authorized PCGS dealer. They would have the "in's and out's" about going over the boarder.

I've done it twice. 40 coins in total.

Joined the PCGS club and used the 8 free gradings coupon.

No problems at customs. Just make sure the PCGS paperwork is perfectly filled out.

Turnaround was 5-6 weeks. Fantastic service. Fantastic packaging and return. I was extremely happy with my experience.

I like PCGS but beware of the shipping cost! Just because you send them 2 coins doesn't mean that each coin will be returned together. Therefore 2 separate shipping rates may apply.
One time I sent a 1967 Double struck Dollar and a $10 1973/74 Olympic mule and was dinged about $45 return shipping for each coin.
If your coins are all classified in the same category then you will not have this problem but should you toss a couple of modern day errors into the mix then look out.
If you are unsure then call there customer support and they will walk you through the process and let you know exactly what you will be paying.

Smallcentguy, since you live in the GTA, my advice is simple. Take your coins to the next Torex, and have Sandy Campbell submit them to PCGS for you. Sandy will take care of the paperwork (e.g., customs, shipping, etc.) and he will also be able to tell you if your small cent coins will come back red, red-brown or body-bagged; he has seen an incredible amount of some of the finest coins out there, so it might be well worth putting him in tune with your collecting interests, for future upgrades. I rarely recommend any coin dealer outright, but Sandy is one of the very few Canadian coin dealers that is also a numismatist and that I have a great deal of respect for.
