Hello- I was wondering if anyone here would be able to give me an idea on what this coin would possibly be graded at? Thank You!

IMHO XF-45 cleaned?
The surface looks suspicious. Pitted?
This may be from a cleaning.
But wait for the experts on these of which I am not.

Welcome!

I agree with WWhitman, this coin looks suspicious (i.e., possibly counterfeit). The color is dull and grayish and details look mushy. The texture in the fields, particularly on the reverse, seems wavy and/or pebbly which is a common feature of counterfeits. The 3-dollar gold piece is one of the most-frequently counterfeited series so you need to be very cautious about buying these.

The 1886 is a very scarce coin, with just 1142 pieces made. In this grade (apparently EF-45 or so, likely cleaned) it would still be worth $1500 or more so counterfeiters can make a big profit if they can find a buyer for their fakes.

Check the weight; a real coin weighs 5.015 grams. If weight is OK you might try sending it to ANACS for authentication. My gut feeling: this one is a fake.

I believe this coin is genuine, although I guess the only way to be 100% is to have it certified by one of the professionals.

I've already checked the weight of the coin & it weighs 5.015 grams.

This coin was one of a few $3 gold coins that I inherited, I've already sold one that the buyer sent off to PCGS to be graded & it came back graded & slabbed. I realize that doesn't guarantee that this coin is genuine as well just because the other one was.

Also, what about the coin leads you to believe it's been cleaned before? Thank you to everyone!

I agree that this coin looks suspicious. The first thing that struck me are the pitted surfaces. If you look up near the headdress there are hairlines and the surfaces look like they lack luster for the amount of details, both of which can be signs of cleaning.

IF this is a genuine coin it is a true rarity.

Almost appears to be casting bubbles on it's surface. I'm not sure if that's pitting.
