I am starting to get into Pre-Decimal coins and would like to but a few Unc shillings. In Greg McDonalds book it says a 1955 shilling in Unc condition is worth $80. Are they around that price or is this a bad estimate? Just wondering how much I could get one for, thanks.

Mc Donald's prices are catalogue prices.
Here are some prices of shillings offered at a current public auction, first price is the reserve, the second is the estimate:

1933: Slabbed NGC AU58 $2000 - $2500

1933: Slightest edge bruise, emu rounded feathers, but star sharp EF-EF+ $800-$1200.

1933: VG/F $100-$150.

1935: Light steel grey tone over full mint bloom, near choice Unc. $350-$600.

1939: Lustrous Unc. / Choice Unc. $250-$300.

1948: Slabbed PCGS MS64 $150-$200.

Add 161/2% buyers commission.
Compare these to Mc Donald's catalogue prices. All prices AUD.

McDonalds prices are what you would expect to pay retail, slabed coins are over priced. I buy allot of my coins from yeoldcoinco, anda dealer sell's well bellow retail

i have a choice 55 slabed, I paid $90 for it. Should be able to pick up unc for $40 to $50. Most people are still chasing the florins, good time to get the shillings

If a coin has a CV of $80 then you should be able to pick one up for around $60 depending on where you buy it.

A bricks and mortar retail outlet will probably be more like $80.
An online retailer like yeoldecoin would be about $60.
An ebay auction would probably be about $40-$50.

These are just guestimates but it really depends on what you are the most comfortable with. Just make sure you study the coin or a photo of the coin for any marks or signs of wear. Don't rely on the seller's claim that it is uncirculated

Unfortunately, my Mc Donald's is not current. That is why I have suggested to compare the current auction prices I have shown with the equivalent in a current Mc Donald's, to determine a trend in variation between the two current price sets, coin for coin.

In this way, you may be able to determine an auction value for the shillings that you are interested in.
