Yeah, the date has definitely been messed with. If he is so sure it's genuine, why not offer a money back guarantee to the buyer if it does not come back from a reputable TPG as genuine? Enough said.

Seems like he is selling a counterfeit coin, yet trying to misdirect buyers. Is this the type of auction that should be reported to ebay as fraudulent? Les

The 7's are not even close. The weak N's are not even close. Total fake for a business strike. Check out the real 7's: ( MUCH wavier across the top!)

Quote: He is calling it a Proof now! That may make up for the strong N's but the 7's are still incorrect. Proof 7's are identical to business strike 7's (obviously!) What irks me, people will pay $1,000's of dollars for such an obvious fake. And then, when it's determined it's fake, they will then try to pass on their loss to some other poor schmuck rather than admit their foolishness by not being knowledgeable about the coin in the first place.

I think the one thing that we can take from all this is that when dealing with key dates-buy certified only, stay away from raw coins.

I just bought a raw one on ebay but I know the diagnostics on this date well. This coin is an obvious fraud and my advice to anyone seeking an 1877 that is unsure of it's authenticity, is to buy one TPG'd.

Quote: I know the diagnostics on this date well Dave, Besides the date and the weak "n" what else should I look for? I did see one once that was like a type 2 1886 with the feathers etc. so I know you need to look at the entire coin but is there anything else specific other than the date and weak "n" I should be looking at? thanks, Steve

Most but not all are fasioned from 1879 dated coins. The 1879 has much more bolder devices, especially the lettering which is a dead giveaway. Under magnification, you should be able to spot the 7 as off, as well as those you mentioned. That's why it's important a clear return policy is honored.

It's illegal to sell counterfits on ebay... this has already been reported to ebay... why don't they take it down?

Because they are making money on the fees...my guess.
