http://www.ebay.com/itm/1877-INDIAN...em19c945eb37It's interesting to me how the seller advertises this coin, and then goes on to correctly explain how to detect counterfeit 1877s by the "boldness" of the reverse "n". Very weird tactic, since this coin has a bold N, and looks more than a little suspicious to me. thoughts?

There's something about the date that looks off to me, with the darkening around the edges, which is not present on the legend. Interesting that the seller puts on information about IHC diagnostics and his awareness of counterfeits and then puts up a coin that could conceivably be one. Even if it were real, the huge reverse scratch would knock it down to VG+ pricing. Red flags all over this auction.

I'm new to buying coins but I have learned a lot here. Everybody on this site who shows a pic will take the photo from directly above the coin. So the slight angle and the plastic glare are concerns. If I had a genuine IHC worth some $700 I think I would get it slabbed.

That's one of the worst scratches I've ever seen on higher grade coin. Honestly, the way I view damage is what grade undamaged would I prefer to see instead of it? Here, I'm at VG-8. The color looks off on the obverse.
The guy rambled on and on about detecting fakes in various IHCs, not just his. It wasn't just a summary and it was poorly written and hard to follow. Strange listing.

I sent him a message asking if he thought it was a "proof". He advertises it as a business strike, though it clearly has a bold "N", so therefore contradicts his own diagnostic information. I agree that the date looks off, so I question the authenticity....and it is really wierd how he mentions all the fake indians on ebay.

I like how he states how to detect a fake one when he is selling one. Over $700 already! You can get a nice original one for that kind of money. Even the date looks messed with. WOW! Plus, the coin looks dipped, cleaned, recolored...you name it!

Well, I'm not an expert in Indian Head coins but, I would say that coin is a fake... the date doesn't look at all right to me.

If I had a high value, highly counterfeited, coin to sell on ebay it would be more than worth it to get it slabbed. The fact that this one is not slabbed is already a red flag to me. I'm not a big fan of slabbing in general, but when you are dealing with one of the most counterfeited coins out there, there is no excuse for not getting it slabbed... unless of course it is a fake, as this one may be!

$862.50, and the coin was relisted because the reserve price wasn't met!

Now he has it at BIN for $1,550 or best offer and, if you read his about me page, he does not sound as illiterate as the response John got back!

I emailed him a few days ago for the same reason. That is, he states all business strikes have a weak N but yet the coin he's selling does not.
He said he thinks it is a proof!
Not that I was interested, that date looks like crap (pardon my crude description)
