I have a good bit of Mercury dimes that I can clearly see the date but the mm area is completely worn. Is there any way to determine the mm or are they just considered to be P?
As far as I know there is no compound you can apply to reveal the date like you can in Buffalo nickels. However there might be die marks to look for that will tell you which mintmark it is.
The mintmark on a Merc is located in a very protected area next to the olive branch, it should be visible down to the AG3/FR2 level. If you do not see a mintmark, then the coin almost certainly never had one.
