why would this grade better than G? doesn't LIBERTY have to be at least partially visible? trying to work on my grading knowledge.

Liberty appears to be obliterated so I'd grade it as Good.

Overall level of detail is better than G; grading guidelines are guidelines but don't take into account strike, coin characteristics, etc. Usually coins aren't graded solely on one attribute, though a weaker Liberty/shield on a seated coin with otherwise XF detail could get it graded VF though technically you need full liberty for F-12 (just an example).

Thanks for the comments all! I graded it as VG-08. The Liberty is weak, though not completely obliterated. The "L" is half visible as well as tops of some of the other letters. The feather detail and rims are definitely VG+-ish. I paid $105 for her, this date is not cheap.

When you see bits of liberty, a complete rim with denticles, and details in the feathers you got to go VG.
I'd say VG 10
