I've been pouring through my collection, deciding which pieces I bought early in my collecting days to sell- and it struck me that what I really want to put together now is a Registry Quality African American set.
Has anybody done this already? Obviously, this is a commemorative only set- but there are some really great designs- and it's a nice bit of history.
Thoughts?

Interesting concept, I do not think I have ever heard of that one before. You would have the BTW and Carver/Washington classics and then you would have Jackie Robinson, Black Revolutionary War Patriots, and Boy Scouts of America Centennial(one of three depicted on obv) modern commem $1s. To wrap things up, you could include the District of Columbia Territory Quarter featuring Duke Ellington. To expand further, there would be 18 BTWs, 12 Carver/Washingtons, Jackie Robinson $5 gold(very expensive), Proof and Unc versions of the moderns, and a PDS and Silver Proof set of DC quarters for a total of 41 unique coins. Did I miss anything

I think it's a great idea and biokemist6 gave great suggestion. And I agree that Jackie Robinson $5 gold will cost you some good money.

that's a great list biokmist, thanks. I'm definitely going to do this set. I think it's a great opportunity and an important collection of coins.
I already have several of these- just need to get them graded.

Sounds like it's going to be a really unusual set of coins. When you get a chance, post some photos of them as you get most or all or even now.

I like the idea of this as well. Some great history and probably a great set you would be able to sell in the future or pass down in your family. pics of what you have would be cool to see

Does anybody know if the basketball commemorative has an African American on the obverse? I found the desegregation one without too much looking. Have a bid for an MS-70 example.

What about the Little Rock Desegregation Commemorative? Isn't that one all about black history?
How about coins of some of the white folks who had a positive impact on black history to mix into the fray...Lincoln, Roosevelt, etc.

also, you can't have an all encompassing black history set without including the 2009 Abe Lincoln commem.,or the 1995 civil war commem.

Obviously you could expand the set onward and onward- but I'm trying to put together a set that has African Americans on the coin.
As a historical question, and I do not know the answer to this, but how were the 1940s-1950s black commemoratives received in the numismatic community when they came out? You don't hear too many stories about that...
I was told by a coin dealer that MLK was considered for a circulating coin- but I don't know how plausible his story was.

Can't find it right off hand, but wasn't there a Tuskeegee Airmen commemorative at one time? Or am I just thinking of something that was presented but shot down? At any rate I think they and the Buffalo Soldiers need recognition on coins.
