Was just thinking, sure would have been nice if the mint would have continued to make the Lincoln Penny with the shield reverse in mint and proof sets with the 95% copper composition. I really like that reverse that they started in 2010. What do you all think?

Agree, I know things change I just miss the copper cents the way they were. The new shield design is better (at least to me) than the memorial design. The way the proof sets keep going up and up it's more difficult to keep buying them each year, We're saving up for the Silver Eagle anniversary set coming late this month.

I agree as well.

It is something that I have recommended more than once, along with eliminating it as a business strike.

I really like the shield's design as it reminds me of a return to a more classic design. However, I also remember the fond memory, of when I was a child, of my Grandfather fascinating me by showing me Lincoln sitting in the Lincoln Memorial on the REV. I also shared this with my kids when they were small and easy to excite!

I like the design as well.

Sometimes, a Mint will ask the Public to submit a design, especially for a commemorative coin. Personally, I think that in most cases, a design done 'in house' is much better, because the professionals understand the vagaries of the minting process.

Nevertheless,

I think the Public should be involved in the concept of a design, especially if it is to be a common definitive design, issued over 20 or more years.

In this case, I think the design of the Shield Cent would be more favoured by the Public than previous designs. I stand to be corrected, but I don't think the Public was asked for approval of the design in this case; it is just that this situation, it has turned out so well.

So how to involve the Public?

The Mint should develop several designs for submission for Public approval. After all, it is the Public that is going to use them!

I have to believe that someone along the line did suggest it to the mint that they go back to the 95% copper cents in the mint and proof sets, but it was decided against for some reason. I am really not a big time cent collector, I am more into the silver coins, but I was wondering how the current cent composition holds up to long term storage vs. the nearly pure copper cent?

sel_691,

I think that's a good idea. I do remember with the State Quarters that (not sure if every state did it) Oklahoma got to vote on the design for the reverse. There were some good and some so-so. Luckily the one I voted for ended up winning.

Artistic standpoint....the shield design is very utilitarian and over-simplified. It could stand to be changed or enhanced. An oak and olive branch around the shield would have given it the touch it needed.
