Well, a problem coin is always a problem coin as they say. The Half Cent might technically be worth over $20, but as the auction demonstrated, it's tough to find a buyer. I suppose the coin serves the purpose of showing what this type was at a reasonable price, but a holed coin in an album....I just couldn't do it. I would have gone with a problem free AG or possibly a pitted or cleaned piece with decent detail to stay on budget.

Well I have 2 type sets. One I'm going in MS for EVERY coin I can, and one that's an actual 7070, just to show what the coins look like. I bought it purposefully like that because I'm doing the low grade set as cheap as I can, with out having culled coins, such as an AG example. You lose so much of the design once it's that worn out. Even with the hole, you can still see the full design.

Not all buyers are on ebay. Besides, I didn't buy this for resale.

I actually find that a holed coin is the best way to go for a type set such as this. You get the best details, for the lowest price.

Even holed coins just want to be loved

I like it.

I personally prefer a holed or cleaned coin with better details than a lower grade undamaged coin of the same price. Especially in a type set where the higher the grade the better you can see and compare the details with the same denominations next to it.

I was thinking of doing an all-holed 7070, where the modern coins would be the more challenging ones (holing them myself would be cheating, of course). So far among moderns I have found a holed Jefferson nickel, and holed JFK halves are pretty common, but have struck out on other denominations.

CaptainWiffo, Thats a cool idea. I didn't really have that stipulation for mine. My only rule was the design should be intact to be viewed as it was intended.

With this coin I'm getting down to some final pieces.

Half Cent 1849-1857
Large Cent 1796-1807
Large Cent 1808-1814
Quarter 1831-1838
Half Dollar 1836-1839 (reeded edge)
Dollar 1840-1865
Dollar 1866-1873
Trade dollar 1873-1883

I hopping that at the show I'm going to in a couple weeks, ill be able to find holed examples of most of the above coins. For the dollars I'm wanting to pay around $80 a piece.
