Div, I know what you're saying. Every once in a while, you can snag one for less than melt (not so much recently though). Gives you another option or two on the sell side. You're right. It is a lot of work. The free shipping filter helps on the first pass. I don't pursue it, but when I stumble across a completed listing that went that way, I think "smart move."

I have bought two proof silver sets on ebay, both for about (+-$2.00) melt, and have since resold one on ebay, and still have the other...I check these often, and look for ones I can snag near or below melt when I have nothing else to buy!

I have also found, that when searching for these sets, I can stick to absolutes. I will buy below X, etc. Much easier than when I was purchasing sports cards, and getting tied to a specific card or autograph.

I tried buying some US proof sets with s mints and all at a "too-good-to-be-true price. Turns out they were not clad in silver in '77 and '78 maybe others, and that happens to be the years I invested in. So I got ripped off thinking I was getting a decent deal. I learned something important though. Thought this might help.

I picked up the 93 prestige set the other day. Real nice box and at $35 the price was right.

As the price of silver goes up and approaches the price that proofs are offered for sale (I'm speaking at the Mint since their price stays static until spot approaches cost) I have purchased the Quarter sets for the same as what junk would have cost. Then to me a deal since not only do they have intrinsic value but collector value as well should silver spot regress

I have been buying US Mint Silver Proof sets for bullion. So far my average delivered price has been 98% of spot. You just have to be ready to lose a lot of auctions, I doubt I win 5% of what I bid on.

That's good pricing. Have you ever been skunked? I am just leary about buying online

I purchased about 20 sets! years range from 2002-2006. I bought during the run up to about 41-42 dollars an oz last year. The kicker? I was getting them for about $30/oz! You have to look at some really obscure places that might sell them. I found 6 of them from an online garden variety store?, few from Amazon.com from small vendors that didn't change the price during the run up. Got some other ones from a sort of American souvenier store type place. Most places have caught on now, but still some deals to be had!

Glad you were able to do so well. I did buy a few of the 2010 5 quarter sets from the mint at the same time just as they removed from sale due to the high price of silver. I just am always leery about buying online.

I buy one every year for my kids, but not really as an investment. There are better ways to put your money in silver IMO. Seems like I never have a problem buying junk silver at 90-95%, just have to be patient and do the "roadwork"

Quote: That's good pricing. Have you ever been skunked? I am just leary about buying online I'm not sure what you mean by "skunked" If you mean cheated the answer is no. If you mean failed to buy anything, then yes, many times. I've had very good luck buying on ebay and ebay has a good buyer protection policy. I worry more about selling on ebay than buying. I've been burnt by a buyer that filed a non-delivery complaint 3 days after the auction on a item that was shipped ground. When it arrived he refused to withdraw his claim. It took 3 months of fighting and threatening to turn him in for mail fraud to get my money.

I meant cheated. Yes my son in law had a similar issue as a seller on ebay. Glad you have done well
