Summer Hunting

I'm fifteen rolls into the pennies now, and it started out pretty slowly. I got nothing of interest to me in the first seven rolls. The next eight gave me ten coins - two Canadian (1980 and 2006 - now my most recently dated Canadian coin), two wheat cents, five S-mint Memorial cents, and a 1959 in such beautiful condition for its age that I had to set it aside.

No pictures yet, but they will be forthcoming when I have completed the box and seen what other delights I might find.

Update - rolls 16-20 only yielded one coin, but it's now my oldest find. 1906 Indian Head!

Three Canadian cents, one Indian Head cent, two wheat cents, the 1959, six S-mint Memorial cents, a New Zealand five cent piece, and a 2005 French obverse 2 Euro cent coin.

I don't have the kind of money to be able to search larger quantities of dimes at a time, and no bank around here accepts CWRs - you either send them through their counter yourself, or they break the rolls and send them through a counter, so nothing in customer wrapping is ever available to another customer later. So that's unfortunately not an option.

Did another batch of dimes, nickels, and a box of pennies over the weekend.

Nothing from dimes, nickels gave me a few keepers - a 1999 Canadian, 1946-S, 1940, 1940-S, and a 1937-74 Dominican 5 centavos (too worn to determine date).

The box of pennies was a small joy - 6 wheats, five from the 50s and one from the 40s, 3 Canadian, and 13 S-mint memorial (three of which were 1970-S).

Those will go into the cigar box with their companions. Looking forward to more nickels and dimes this week, and maybe another box of pennies.

Now that I've sorted through everything I picked up during the week of June 2-8th, here are some pictures of those finds. I'll be doing this for particularly productive weeks, and once more with everything I found at the end of the summer.

I went through three rolls of dimes, five rolls of nickels, and a bag containing $60.50 in halves at the beginning of the weekend to finish my week. Totaling my rolls, I went through a box of pennies, nearly a box each of nickels and dimes, and the equivalent of half a box of half dollars this week.

So here's everything I found this week together.


The US non-silver, including the two NIFC half dollars I picked up from my partial bag. Five wheats and 11 LMC S-mints among the pennies. One of the nickels is sitting on top of another in the top row.

My foreign finds - a teller at my dump bank saved the Euro cent for me. Everything else here came in rolls.

amazing finds SR . Regarding the foreign finds I am so glad you got that British five pence ! Those cupronickel 5 pence coins are now being gradually removed from circulation over here and will eventually be replaced by steel core ones so you got yourself a 5p that will soon be hard to find......

I figure it's been a bit, and I have quite a few coins found since my last update. Since the last update I've done two full boxes of nickels now (and probably two boxes worth of extra rolls), a box or so worth of dime rolls, at least two boxes worth of halves loose and in rolls, and a few boxes of pennies.

I've also had a couple friends give me some coins to add to my collection - one gave me some Rupees from a past trip to India, another spent a month visiting family in Spain and brought me back around eight Euros (one of the 2 Euro coins is a 10th anniversary of the EMU which is now one of my pocket pieces), and another visited London for research and brought back 86 pence for me.

On to the pictures.

In $25 loose last week, I found $6.50 in half dollars dated 2009, including two I think might be grease-filled dies, one P and one D mint. These are the best pictures I could get of the two:



My most recent box of pennies brought me several nice coins, including some BU and bright red 40s and 50s wheat cents (I got three 1946-S in the box). However, what I like best are these two coins - a 1922-D and an 1886 IHC.

The 1886 IHC is a type 2, though it's pretty much impossible to tell without a loupe and holding the coin.


The Euros and UK loose change, both what my friends have given me and what my hunting has found for me - I particularly like the new coat of arms reverses and am glad my friend brought me a couple coins with it.



A look at everything I've acquired this summer:


The rolls are where I'm storing most of the U.S. coins. I have a few full rolls - one of S-mint LMCs, one of S-mint nickels, and one of NIFC halves. I've also nearly filled a roll of wheats, and several more rolls filling fast of nickels and pennies and now another roll of NIFC halves nearly complete.

And lastly, the silver. Two silver dimes, two 90% silver halves, seven War Nickels, and ten 40% halves.


Oh this has been fun. And I still have another month and a half before school starts again.
