They weren't being taxed by a foreign power. They were living in North America but the colonies were British and before the revolution most colonists considered themselves to be Englishmen and were loyal to the crown. The problem wasn't that they were being taxed, or being taxed by a "foreign power", it was the fact that they had no representation or voice in the Parliment that was passing the taxes upon them. Frankly if the colonies had been allowed to elect representative to the House of Commons the entire Revolutionary War might have been avoided and we might have still been part of the British Commonwealth today.

The most you really need to do is a quick acetone wash and then put them into flips of some sort. It is unlikely that the silvers will ever be worth much more than melt. But they will look good in an album of 2x2s!
