It looks whizzed, heavily polished to my eye. Possibly, this was a jewelry piece?

nice American friends,
I am the owner and seller of $ 5 under discussion,
arriving a little late, but I would like to clarify a few things,
the currency is completely original, and has not been tampered with, because she lacked the letter S is a mystery to me,
as regards the gray back of the head of the eagle, they are deposits of dust or dirt.
are different lamps that use, they give me a light perpendicular
to bring out all the flaws, and a light ring to bring out the luster of minting
that's why someone may seem too bright
I think it's still an interesting piece
thanks for your attention
and for the interest
a warm greeting from italy

Welcome to the CCF, Onegast! Buongiorno!

In my humble opinion, I do strongly believe that this coin has been doctored. The comments and observations of others here tend to support this opinion. Contrary to a few others, I suspect that it's a genuine coin, and perhaps certification would be in order, as a significant percentage of gold coins are counterfeit. I seriously doubt that this coin would receive other that a details grade by any of the top grading companies.

To my eye, this gold piece looks to have been polished. There is significant wear in some areas, being most noticeable on the eagle's wing. There are a few long scratches, too. This adds to my thought that the coin was a jewelry piece and mishandled as such. Then too, it may have been in a bezel at one time. A severe polishing, followed by a "gold washing" would account for the disappearing "S" in PLURIBUS.

When ya click on the image and it expands you can see the outline of the S and the crevice along the eagles breast appears to have been tooled down smooth for some reason.

The weight of a "new" one is 8.35g, so it's probably genuine, just slightly worn.

Upon further review of these pictures, I'll say it's a genuine coin that's been cleaned or improperly handled.

Regardless, details coin and a slight Greaser.

I say genuine, VF, but polished. Worth only the gold content.

I'd still like to hear a good explanation as to how the S disappeared. Grease won't do it and neither would wear or polishing of the coin.

I can think of one way but it is very unlikely.
