Quote: You mean registered and insured or just insured. I'm not sure you can insure certified mail. Certified mail is just a post office rip off. Costly but with no special handling or tracking. I like the idea of dealers but it would be slick in a holder and than sent to HA or DORC for an auction. Let the highest bidder prevail. You might get some fanatic who just needs to own numismatic rarities, heck you might get two go to bidding war and than this goes to the moon for you.

If you intend to keep it, there is as you said no real reason to send it out to get certified except to satisfy your own curiosity as to whether or not it is genuine.
If you plan on selling it, as dsfreeworld stated above, the best thing to do would be to list it for auction with a major auction house such as Heritage or Stacks Bowers. If you do plan on selling it, contact the auction house you plan to use prior to sending it out for certification. Depending on the auction house they may offer to have it certified themselves prior to listing it for auction, which would save you some of the hassle.

After reading all the replies and getting so much really good advice I am still undecided on which way to go. I would love to know the value of such a coin. That would really dictate what I will do. I read the one post and the story ended up that his error coin was worth 7K. That is a fair amount of money but for that I would keep it and pass it along to my child. If the coin has a more significant value 20-30K than I would consider selling the coin. I have no doubt the coin is real since it has been with my family for over 100 years but it would be nice to have an expert opinion for grading. I received several coins and with all the research I have been doing I find this to be a very interesting hobby and would like to expand on my knowledge. I have contacted a local coin dealer from one of the original replies, Dart in Middletown NY . I am going to speak with him this weekend and see what he says.

Dart stamp and coin in Middletown, NY. I would highly recommend Tom cause I go to him. Tom knows his stuff and he knows errors too. You may want to call him and set up a time. He is closed Wednesday and Sunday and days when he goes to larger shows.

Details look correct for an 1831 Capped Bust half dollar. Odds are good you have a rare mint error. Best bet is probably just to send it over to PCGS for grading and be sure to insure it for $7000 or so to cover any loss if the postal service messes up.

you'll never know the true value of a coin like this. Its really worth what someone is willing to pay and that number will vary between the possibility of a dealer looking to get a deal, a collector looking to get a deal or multiple collectors who have deep pockets that want this one badly enough. It's not like there is a population of this coin with historic FMV and hammered finals to gauge.
You should set a $20K reserve and send it to auction. If it does not sell at least you'll see what the market was willing to bear.

Whew, breathtaking brockage!! I would send it to Heritage, they'll get it slabbed for you since it's the only coin you have to get authenticated. And they do a wonderful job hyping up the advertising for inclusion into one of their bigger auctions. Best of luck through the sale! I'll chronicle it through a video on my channel on youtube.

Not sure why there is an obsession with getting it "authenticated by a TPG"? There are plenty of experts in the field that can authenticate this for free and likely make an offer. Fred Weinberg immediately comes to mind.

I was reading this thread and only looked at the month and day - I figured this was all going down this week, but I failed to notice the year. Wonder what OP did? Cool error!

Wow. Looks good from the pics. Send it to PCGS under express tier, registered mail and insure for $10k. If you don't have a pcs membership find a PCGS authorized dealer near you to send in for you.
