So when NGC conserved coins for a high profile client and the coins were obviously cleaned they just invented a new term for it...

Don't get conned by the TPG companies telling you that conservation isn't the same thing as cleaning.

I've had a few friends send coins in for conservation and they both came back brilliant, flashy white. To me, they both looked like they had been dipped.

Also, both friends and myself were not pleased with the results.

What a piece of propaganda that shipwreck piece was. I wonder if they hurt themselves patting themselves on the back And for each coin, another $100 goes into the NGC pocket .. what a racket!

I posted the following in other thread when a new type grading sticker had been announced:

Quote:

Coin-Cleaning-Vs-Coin-Conservation?
Date: April, 2, 2042
Subject: SOLD! ebay BIN
Winning Bid: @20,000.00

Seller Comments: Can you believe people used to think the professional verification services were nonsense? Grab this rare gem now. I am not sure which Ike the slab actually contains, but its had every possible service verify it, its slab, and verify each others' verification process(eseses -- and a few more checked all of this).

The slab was meticulously assessed by the highly respected (bow heads please) Professional Slab Grading Service. Upon the coin and slab arriving at their (honorable) company, the forty-two-graders-minimum-check-system for all measurements (nanometer tolerances) was utilized. The masses of data was compiled for each verifiable characteristic. The same forty-two graders then cross checked each others work before the final decision was debated for a three day period as to the actual, factual, honest to goodness, non-debatable, better-believe-it-Bud grade of the coin, slab, verification sticker, verification of the verification sticker ver... (you get the idea). These professionals are such expert experts at being experts that they completed this unparalleld-in-professionalism process (including the 72 hour debate) in only 12 seconds! Then the coveted matching-color-of-original-slab label was affixed.

Questions for seller:
Question 1: How can I tell if I already have this specific coin or not since the stickers obscure the date?
Answer: I have Blocked your bidding. You obviously don't appreciate the expertise and over 500,000 combined total years of professional grading that had gone into this item's verified, verified verification, ver... (you get the idea) history.

Question 2: I don't see the Soopa-Doopa-Clear-CACCA-MACCA-Have-A_TIC-TACCA Color verification sticker. Why not?
Answer 2: Now you know why this gem is offered at such a low price! Use the BIN, send it in yourself, and increase its value by another whopping 10.00. It only costs 50.00 for the service if they give you a sticker and 150.00 if they don't! And of course their iron clad service guarantee will refund the entire cost to you if you find them in error ((less the 300.00 paperwork and shipping fee it will cost you to send the error back to them, and they will have to keep the error specimen for their records).

Question 2: I see the rotational alignment sticker says 0%. But I see the sticker uses the Ariel font. I thought all originals of this sticker used Times News Font?
Answer: The Times News font is only on the older, and now more valuable silver colored editions of these stickers. It IS rumored the issuing of these brass-foil stickers will soon be terminated and replaced by copper-foil. These brass-foil-stickered slabs should escalate in price very rapidly.

Question 4: The Eisenhower dollars have not been made now for 64 years. I have heard some had silver content in them. Do you know if this is one of them?
Answer: All that perfect plastic, verified verifications, ver... (you get the idea) and you are worried about a little PM?!? Get a REAL life! Blocked from bidding!

Some of us older collectors saw the TPGs as a sham when they were introduced. Knowing no one would be ridiculous enough to fall for it, we joked about how someone eventually would be able to con more people by offering a way to grade if the slabbers had graded the coin properly. We joked about it b/c we knew KNEW no one would be foolish (not being mean here - being factual to what we used to say) enough to fall for such a scam. Oh well.

I'm going to go against the grain on this. There is cleaning and then there is cleaning. The products and/or techniques used to "conserve" coins by TPGs are no different than techniques generally used and accepted to not harm/alter the coin's surface within the coin collecting community. These include acetone, verdigris, tooth pics, etc...When used correctly these have become acceptable forms of "cleaning" and would not be body bagged by TPGs if and when done correctly. How about soap and water? What do we call that? Better yet, just water?...As far as TPGs making a business out of it, I don't see anything wrong with it. If someone is not comfortable removing PVC or glue residue from a coin (or changing a spare tire) and wants to spend 50 bucks doing it, so be it.

Excellent! My new coin conservation business is up and running. " PacifiCoinservation " tm . Guaranteed results or no charge.
Rates start at ten percent of the coins value minimum rate 75.00 per submission.
As Coinhunter states anyone with a brain and years of experience can do what the TPGs are doing as far as coin conservation goes.

I find the cost of the services of NCS and NGC cost to conserve and grade a bit like, "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours."

When they charge a set fee + a 5% of the fair market value of the coin, would it not be in the best interest of their firm to grade higher? A higher grade could command a lot more in the value of the coin, ie. MS64 vs MS65.

I don't agree with the TPG's charging a higher fee for the more valuable coins.

Actually in the jewelry appraising profession, both the US and British organizations (GIA and FGA respectively) consider it UNETHICAL to charge an appraising fee based on the final value of the item (be it a piece of jewelry or a loose gemstone). The fee should be based on 'time spent' only.

That is a great point doubleeagle, I hate these percentage based fees as they do seem very unethical as it's in there best interest to give it a higher "value".

Not every business is part of a conspiracy theory driven by a lack of ethics.

Perhaps not.. but in court if there were charges against you would you want a judge that's only paid on convictions... or how about a police force... do you think they would be effective if their only source of revenue was from giving out tickets?

The argument is solid that there CAN be motivation for a "conservation" company to be paid on the percentage of what the coin is graded.

If you're receiving a service of some sort you should pay for the service itself not based on the value of item.

This makes me hesitant about buying a NGC slabbed coin.

There is a seller that describes the following coin, where he states it was NCS Conserved:
China 1984; Silver Panda; 10 Yuan; PROOF; NGC PF-68 Ultra Cameo (NCS conserved)

There is a photo of the coin. The NGC slab states no where that it was conserved. When you check the NGC Registry to find out more information about the coin, it does NOT list that this coin was 'conserved' by its sister company, NCS.

I feel that there should be a remark somewhere, either on the slab or registry to state it was 'NCS conserved', to ensure full and transparent disclosure.

Had this seller never mentioned in his listing price that it was "NCS Conserved", a buyer would not be able to know.

In my opinion, NGC could do better by providing full disclosure. As well, since NCS collects a fee based on % of the market value of the coin (upon receiving the NGC grade), it could be possible that this coin could have received a lower grade in the un-conserved condition, since American grading standards consider eye appeal and lustre as part of their grading standards.
