I agree with both suggestions..
-Lincoln wheat cents 1940-1958
-Lincoln memorial cents 1959-2008 (you can pretty easily complete 2009 to present as well but they are a different design than memorials)
-Jefferson nickels 1938-present

There is a huge brotherhood amongst Penny collectors, here in the CCF. Lots of posts attest to this.
If you are into silver classics, try silver Dimes to begin with.

^ Haha nice one jbuck! The first US series I put together was US State Quarters. ATB Quarters and Presidential dollars were the next ones. The quarters are doable from going through rolls, especially if you aren't concerned about the different mint marks. |

I second the silver roosevelts. I was able to complete a circulated set as a beginner, then I went through and upgraded them all to BU. You should be able to do most of a circulated set for under $1.50 per coin.

 Try collecting all the 1964 Jefferson nickels.  Just kidding of course. I too say try for a Jefferson nickel collection since you could possibly get them all from change. |

There are a lot of advantages to collecting coins that are actively circulating. The chief advantage, of course, is easy access to lots of typical examples of each date.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

As my name infers, I have a soft spot for nickels. Since I collect for the history in it, and I consider Jefferson one of our greatest founding fathers, it's the first set I ever completed and still keep up with, adding each current year as it comes out, including proofs. BTW....good luck getting the 50D from circulating coinage.
