What is it encased in? I see what looks like a metal ring around it. And you are correct about it not fitting in a direct fit Airtite with that ring on it.

If thats some form of metal ring around it or that it is in, I would get it away from the coin as quickly as possible. BE CAREFUL GETTING IT OUT.

The rubber rings are just what you said "rubber rings". You don't want that rubber always against your coin. Somewhere down the line they could find out it contains some chemicals, etc. Why take a chance if you don't have to. Besides the direct fit lets you view the edges of the coin. This is my opinion only. Actually 2x2's are available also and they are very nice. If you are going to leave it in the encasement try an "Airtite" that fits a Silver Eagle. They are a little large than the Morgan size.

Do you know what the other side looks like? Is there a mint mark? Might be a very valuable coin. Has it been encased since 1955, or anound that date? Probably need an ASE or Silver Round size airtite.

I don't know if it's been taken out or not, there were only about 3,000 of these made. I'm thinking it was probably glued on. I don't have it in hand yet but it's coming. These are the sellers pictures.

I'd be looking at an Intercept Shield in 40mm size for something like this; you don't really know what the encasement is made of, or how reactive it'll be with various stuff in the atmosphere.

There are only a couple of 1890 varieties which draw more than passing interest, and only one I can think of off the top of my head (1890-CC Tailbar) which doesn't show evidence on the obverse. That one is available in Mint State grades, so even if this coin were the VAM it wouldn't be prohibitively valuable, especially considering it probably wouldn't slab.

I have no plans to take the casing off, I bought it for the casing! I work for this company and I have quite a collection of stuff from this company. This was the big kahuna that got away 3 times before and I finally won it. I plan on putting it in an air tite and using it for an educational piece at work.

Looks like a great piece of memorabilia! And of course you'll keep it in the encasement, that's what makes it special. I've seen shell cents before, an I've seen stickered dollars, but that is the first shell dollar I've seen.

Typically on shell coins the coin fit down inside the shell and then it was run through a machine that pressed rollers against the edge of the shell crimping it around the edge of the coin and that is what keep the coin from falling out. I'm looking for one (cent)that was sold as a souvenir outside the courthouse at the Hauptmann Lindburgh kidnapping trial.

Yup I am super excited about this one. I had to get off some change for it. I know people that have been involved with this company from the 60's and 70's that never saw one. The only reference I have is an old book that has a picture of one. There have only been 3 on ebay (This being the 2nd time this one has been up) and I had to have it. The other 2 auctions got sniped, but this time I got greedy and spent some $$$. No concerns though, I HAD TO HAVE IT!! Thanks for all the input, I ordered a 40mm ring last night.
