Hello - I'm just now getting into PM's in the last couple of weeks. So far I have 4 generic silver rounds, a Morgan silver dollar, a silver maple leaf and 6 ASE. I have about $650.00 that I would like to put into silver PM's over the next week. Trying to decide what would be the best use of those funds. Does it make sense to purchase Morgan silver dollars? I can get them at my local coin shop for $25.00/cull and others between $28 - $30/each. I'm concerned about buying silver rounds - will I easily be able to sell them when I need to? I have a couple of Christmas coins and a buffalo head - they are all stamped 1 troy oz .999 Would I be better off buying a 20 coin tube of ASE or Silver Maples? After this purchase I will be buying an ounce or two a pay period so I want to make a good purchase to have some silver just in case it does go up and I'm only able to buy an oz a month. I hope this post made sense and look forward to hearing from you. Thanks,

There really isn't a poor choice. Though you should decide early what you want from it all. For example if you are in it for numismatic purposes then you will want to focus on coins. You have many choices but you want to buy the best graded coins you can buy. If your in it for the hobby then there are many different cool designs from bard to rounds. If your speculating then it all changes. The key is your cost to acquire then profit to sell. If you think the world is ending then 90% silver might be your ticket. Now to answer which is better the ASE or Maple then I would tell you neither is better. I like one of them better but really that is personal taste. With the cost of a Morgan or Peace Silver dollar at $22.97 I think $25 for cull is high, other s may not think the same. However the older Silver dollars have been getting more premium lately. Silver rounds are easy to sell though some people may not want to pay what they are worth, the silver bullion coins such as ASE and Maples hold their value better. The word of wisdom I can give it it appears too cheap then make sure you know what you are buying. Good luck and have fun.

Buy what you enjoy. Then, regardless or market price, you already were paid back in enjoyment.

Thanks for the advise. I do have a very small coin collection that is seperate from this. I am concerned about the economy, inflation and what the dollar will be worth long term. I have a 401K, however I also want some solid assests as well. I have a small CD that is due and I didn't reinvest b/c there really is no return. I'm using those funds to start the PM investment. Granted it's a small investment and I plan to continue investing a little every pay period. What I have thought, but wasn't sure about is that the ASE and Silver Maple Leaf may be the best purchase as far holding their investment value. If I didn't misread your post - it sounds like that along the line of your thoughts as well.

I do in fact like silver bullion coins however I too am diversified. I have some 90% coins and I have gambled on some ASE proofs. I have even gambled of a few numismatic coins. If I find silver bars or rounds at a very low premium then I buy them too. In general I manage my silver and gold for profit which means I do at times sell some. I have more than enough to survive a sudden lost in value of the dollar. I can't guarantee that any certain type of PM is the best or will hold its premium. I am strictly a speculator and profit is my number one concern. The main point is my way might not fit what anyone else is looking for. But in the end a government issued bullion coin has done very well for me. Just watch the premiums on them.

First thing I did was divide 650 by the spot price, and that is roughly 20 oz. worth if you go real cheap close to spot silver.... http://www.providentmetals.com/checkout/cart/That is 20 Phil Harmonics in my shopping cart at Provident, and it is 642. Add about 9 more for shipping, and you are one dollar over budget....

I'd buy ASE's. They're awesome looking, and the metal content is guaranteed by the guh-ment. Silver maples are not as pretty, and they have problems with developing milk-spots.

Ok now explain to me how a milk spot hurts the value of a BULLION coin? It doesn't not one bit. BTW the ASE has had the same problems if you recall the really bad years for the 2006 & 2007 ASE's. If I recall even their proof coins had milk spotting issues. In any event people tend to forget we are talking about bullion coins!!! Both are backed by the producer - the government. Now which one is more pretty than the other - that is in the eye of the beholder. Like I said I am in the silver and gold speculation for the profit and well I have done a little better on Maples than ASE's.

True dat, there was a member here, who about 6 months ago or so got a nice proof eagle, and you could not see it in the picture clearly, and it had a tone line right across the face of it. Still a nice graded coin, but the dealer should have made note of it, and not took a funny angle shady picture. The member here was not too happy about it, but bit the bullet on it an kept it if memory serves me correct. It probably will never bring what the same proof eagle with no brown pencil thin tone line will bring. So that is a fact, people like nice things to look at. Whether we all do or not and some could care less if the silver is toned black or not, via 100 oz. bar is a 100 oz. bar. Just another form of currency in the end, in the form we chose for it to be in....

Some individual buyers are turned off by milk spots but most businesses are not. To them, an oz. of silver is an oz. of silver. You can do a search of You Tube to find a couple of ways of getting rid of those spots if they occur on your coins and you don't like the way they look. These are bullion coins, so a little gentle cleaning should not be a big deal. I have both ASEs and silver Maples and like both. I really like the Walking Liberty design on the ASE but the reverse of the Maple is very nice too. Bottom line, like Fredd said, is to get what you enjoy. Collecting PMs tends to be a long-term hobby, so there is plenty of time to branch out into other areas later on. There are a lot of possible choices and all can be good... coins, bars, and rounds... hard to make a bad choice, actually.

Just bought a few rolls of 2012 SAE's from Provident, thanks Silverhawk they completely skipped through my radar. I love how shipping was only $12, got sick of APMEX charging me $25. Thanks for the tip

Thanks for all the feedback and the suggestion to check out Provident. I've been browsing their site tonight and will place an order with them this week. I haven't quite decided what to buy yet. They are out of the Phil Harmonics so I will most likely buy ASE or Maple Leaf. Thanks again - looking forward to learning a lot on this forum.

You are quite welcome! Good luck. I'm sure in a local shop when they are not busy you could get a lot of helpful info plus see the PM up close and personal!
