Ed_B Pillar of the Community United States 4008 Posts	Posted 03/06/2012 12:10 am Unlike Ag, Pt does not react with O2 except under extreme conditions that are unlikely to be found outside a lab... oxygen furnace + 2500-3000F, etc. Pt is definitely a "noble metal" and resists forming compounds except in extreme chemical and physical environments. It is unlikely that anyone has "toned" Pt just laying around. Dirty or stained, perhaps, but not toned as we tend to think of coins toning. Report this Post to the Staff

Ed_B Pillar of the Community United States 4008 Posts	Posted 03/06/2012 6:45 pm Yes, you could do that. A natural gas and air flame, such as from a Bunsen burner, should be good for that. That should "cook off" just about any dirt or oil on the coin and leave it very clean. This would have to be done VERY carefully, though, so as to not damage the coin by careless handling. Pt coins tend to be expensive items, so it would probably be best to minimize handling and cleaning. Perhaps a very gentle rub with a cotton ball and some isopropanol would be sufficient for removing any dirt or oil from the coin without causing damage to it. Report this Post to the Staff
