I have my shop in Serbia but you can buy coins only personally because I dont send outside of Serbia. I can probably provide more coins than more coin stores on web. If you have money to spare for plain ticket than you can buy 2-3k of great condition roman coins at any time :)

Although ancient coins only occupy about 15% of my collection, they engage the numismatic part of by brain to a much greater extent.
To put it another way, ancient coins are my most important numismatic love.

Very very overpriced coins at Forum ancient coins. I have not made my mind up yet about the site. The owner advises against buying from ebay, but as he will openly admit, he sells and buys there himself. Some of his late Roman bronze stock came from me indirectly and he then lists them at about 2-3 times the price on Forum. I do not think this kind of price hike is justified just for the sake of them being guaranteed authentic. Most ebay sellers, myself included will offer a no quibble guarantee of authenticity and a returns policy which covers you completely.
Therefore you can buy in confidence from ebay where a guarantee exists and then post here for confirmation in doubt to put your mind at ease and return if you think they are fake. Always pay through paypal, because they will withhold the cash from the sellers account if they gat a fake report from you and the seller will be forced to refund. Avoid Bulgaria!! an awful lot of obviously fake coins from here.

I agree about forum ancient coins. Coins are way overpriced and they want to buy for cheap. And about Bulgaria... since they are next to my country I must say they are number one in the world in making fake roman coins.... they are making mostly silver denarius fakes. If you want to buy from them you must be skilled expert in recognizing fakes, like myself. Also if you have dilema about some coin you can ask me and I will tell you is that coin fake or not just from picture.

Caesar381 , Silver denarius fakes are very obvious to you and me, but they still catch out the new collector and sadly that is why the Bulgarian sellers still list them. Its a shame, but hopefully there are enough collectors/dealers on here to know the fakes from the genuine and offer advice to CCF members who may be concerned about a purchase, past or intended.
I have no doubt that Forum can guarantee their coins as they have a wealth of experience and of course they can charge what they like as its a free world, but I think to scare people away from ebay is a little underhand when they source and sell some stock from there.
This discussion could not take place on their Forum either as its heavily censored. Thank goodness for CCF!!
Shame I'd have to buy a plane ticket to buy coins as you sound like you have some interesting stock! I may still buy a plane ticket though.

Forum Ancient Coins is the Benchmark for proper numismatics, in the sense that being online it allows folks to learn all there need be about the subject.
Joe's website also needs paying for, so the money has to come from somewhere, so the consignments do that job.
So it is a reciprocal action, the coins for sale fund the website that provides a wealth of information.
Also the terrific work done in providing an online record of Fake coins.

When I started selling coins, I sold an AR Tetradrachm of Ptolemy XII to a buyer from the State of Michigan, USA, for £25.
A month later I saw the same coin listed on Forum for about $250.

A lesson learned, never to undersell a good coin.
If no one wants to buy at a sensible price, so what, it goes to my collection.

On Bulgaria, I notice on ebay a lot of Bulgarian sellers, who base themselves in the Netherlands, Germany and Austria.
If they have their contact details on their listings page you will see the address in Germany, for example, but the name is Bulgarian and even the email address is ".bg" (Bulgaria).
For example, tying in to Forum, last year I bid on an auction, that Forum offers to members for free.
The seller had their address in Austria.
After winning, and paying via PayPal I saw the sellers name was Bulgarian.
Then the coins arrived, with the address sent from Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.
Suffice to say, I did not buy again from the seller, knowing the laws Bulgaria has against the export of its antiquities, and it is obviously for this reason that Bulgarian dealers in ancient coins "set up shop" in other European countries.

I must add however that Bulgaria should not be associated purely with Fake coins. Bulgaria obviously has, even now, a wealth of antiquities including ancient coins, going back to the Thracian "Odrysian" dynasty as well as numismatic associations and publications, such as the works by Ivan Varbanov. This goes a lot to counter the marring done to the country by the makers of Fake coins in that country.

And it must be added, that there are other countries where Fake coins are produced.
There is here, England and there was (if not still) the notorious "Toronoto Group" of Canada.

So to end, it is best buying ancient coins from a known, reputable source which can be an actual Shop or on ebay which has hugely tightened the rights of Buyers v Sellers.

Forum, back in 2003 (at least) was the Benchmark in doing this kind of quality guarantee and still is.

I think anyone who offers a guarantee and a return policy with no quibble is equally reputable, but the fact that we do not charge 3 times the amount for the coins makes us 'others' a better prospect for collectors with a budget.
If you can buy 3 times as many coins from a reputable ebay seller with a guarantee and are AS, if not MORE protected by paypal and ebay, then its a no brainer in my opinion.

The market price for ancient coins is perhaps the most subjective field possible outside of "Modern Art". As no two will be exactly alike and any grouping of mint state coins will have a variety of pros and cons, valuing them is always an 'art'. I have seen dealers with some of the same coins in the display case for years if not decades ! This used to puzzle me. Now that I have done some selling I have a clearer understanding. They obviously really like having the coins and are in no hurry to see them sold off! On occasion I will list some ancients. Sometimes real beauties for $1.99 starting bid. Sometimes beauties for what I feel is my break even. Sometimes beauties for a 'silly' price ...... I figure if someone wants to pay that much I can find another nicer one
and probably find two more to boot !

Its all about how motivated the dealer is isn't it ? Some 'dealers' are just bored collectors with too much time on their hands and they are more interested in actually buying than selling.

For a real 'market' price the only accurate guide is an open auction. What is this coin worth ? Whatever some darn fool will pay for it ...... today - right now !

True, thats why when I sell on ebay I know the coin will most likely find its value...and so I am not too put off by the odd 'low' price, because it may be that on that occasion (within a 7 day period usually), chances are that the right people just didnt see the listing. Usually the longer the selling period/auction duration the better the price achieved, but its a fine line between a suitably long period and buyers getting bored with a 30 day listing!!

Masis you are somewhat right about ancientcoinsforvm. Also you are right about Bulgaria. They have rich history. But after its forbidden to metaldetect there, because of damaging and destroying roman and other historic and cultural sites, people started to make fakes because it is relatively poor country and people are desperate to earn some money... At my country is another story. We get so many coins and all kind of things but cant sell em because sending in another country is risky. Package probably wont cross the border and you can have problems because of that. Imagine that... I was thinking to take 3000 roman coins with me and go to USA by plane... I could get rich... or... get free food and bed in jail :) its something like playing with angry bear.

Caesar381, what are the laws regarding buying ancient coins in Serbia if you don't live there? For instance, if I happened to be in Serbia and bought a bunch of ancient coins, would I make it out of the country with them?

Interesting thread, personally I never buy coins from Bulgaria and very seldom buy outside the US unless I know the dealer. There is a sticky thread in this forum where you can post coins that are known fakes.

Yes! I've just had an ebay listing go past the 12hour threshhold. I emailed the seller a few days ago asking if he had any more of the same ie. Byzantine cup coins (hoard material)and he said no and he would probably end the listing early as his mate wanted them......not with my 99p bid on and 11hrs 58mins left to go he wont....
