I just bought a 1921 S Morgan dollar on ebay, and after looking closely at it I saw the lines over STATES. I dont know a lot about coins so I was hoping someone could help me figure out what this coin is worth.

Don't know myself, but Superdave and/or Becky will be along soon to tell you what's going on.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Cool score! I know of, I think, six now, including yours. I've sold one of my two on ebay recently, and the second is going on the block soon. Here's the link to the auction:

There's a lesson to be learned here about supply and demand. Although this is an extremely rare VAM right now, there's reason to believe that more will be found going forward. Also, there are relatively few people interested in arcane 1921-S VAM's besides the Thornheads.

All of that will change with time. The popularity of 1921-D's has exploded in the last two years, and as more people begin fleshing out a collection of those, they will cast around looking to add value somehow. Then, the Pitted Reverse 1921-P's and San Francisco VAM's like the 1L and 1Y (which seems to be the rarer of the two) will have their day in the sun. For right now, I don't know how much premium it carries, as evidenced by the guy who got mine for less than $20.

That coin, a little larger:

Yeah, that surprised the heck out of me. Lemme know when you're gonna sell the other one. I bid better than that

Welcome to the forum scmoore61. To answer your question, VAM is an acronym for the authors (Van Allen and Mallis)of a book, the Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan & Peace Dollars, detailing all of the major varities of those dollars. VAM numbers are assigned to each dollar variety. It is interesting to note that even now, years after these coins were minted, new VAM varieties are still being discovered and assigned by Leroy Van Allen (George Mallis died in 1999).

SuperDave, thanks for the info, even though it is disappointing. I thought I had found my lottery ticket. Those were great pictures of your coin though. I thought it was the coin I bought. There is a lamination smear by the right wing of my coin also. It must be part of the error. I do have some scratches in different spots though. If there are only a few known in existance I dont think I would sell it for less than a couple hundred dollars.

Here are some pictures.

Expect an onslaught, starting this weekend. I have about 25 left, and I'm going to list them all over 3 days.

Superdave
Why not set up an auction on coin community, instead of ebay, I guarantee it will be more then $20 as I know I would bid much higher
