Not sure if the coin is an honest XF but it is VF35 for sure. With any coin there can be hidden problems too.

Does a VF Morgan have luster? In most series the luster starts appear at XF. Of course there are issues that cause a coin to net down.

I think it is XF and unless it was cleaned or tooled. If there was a little more detail on the eagle's breast and the hair was a bit more defined it could probably even score AU. I have a couple AU NGC graded Morgans that actually look worse than that. I wouldn't go by luster ever, even a very dull coin can be perfectly struck detail wise.

The seller stated natural surfaces. Do you think it may score a higher grade if I get it graded?

This coin is a toss-up for grading. It has rim bumps at high noon on the obverse, numerous contact marks, and obviously has been circulated. Overall a nice coin though and XF40 is a fair grade. I noted VF35 as a "worst case scenario". The coin has no chance of grading AU at a major TPG.

My honest appraisal would put it at $200 retail.

Retail price is really relevant to who is selling it and how fast you want to sell it. I know at shows and shops they would price it at $250 or a little more depending on what gray sheet is saying it is worth. I would expect in order to sell it at an online auction you would receive a minimum of one bid at $200.

Interesting, I took this coin to a shop today after talking to them on the phone. They said they would make an offer on the phone but when I went there, they verified it was authentic but didn't want to make an offer because they can't sell that date. I told them I think that I could get $200 online for it and they said you should sell it there then. Maybe I should take it to a show. Does anyone know the graysheet value of this coin? That is what they were looking at it.

Initially I'd be torn on this, too. But in the end, I feel the right thing to do is cancel the deal and just "pretend" you lost the coin to a higher bidder.

Greysheet Bid/Ask are $195/$215 in VF and $230/$250 in XF. Auction results are PCGS/NGC certified XF40 pieces average around $230.

Huh, NGC lists certified coins at $295. I told them I could get $200 online I think but would have settled for $175 cash at a shop. Of course this is a precious metal shop where I got to get V nickels and Buffalo nickels because they have a ton and can't really sell them.

I know that for some reason buyers on ebay like to spend WAY too much on coins and bullion. I have seen ASE go for over $10 over spot so you could probably make some cash on there. Some buyers may be hesitant to buy a raw coin. If I were you I would spend the $30 and send it in to get slabbed.

Question though....why not just keep it for your collection instead of flipping it?

I don't even have a Morgan and don't see the reason to keep the $250 one. I bought it for obvious reasons but don't want it. I wouldn't mind getting a BU common Morgan though. I was considering trading the dealer for other coins I am more comfortable selling on ebay. I know what you mean about the ASE, I can get a better deal on an ASE at Silvertowne when they have a deal. Of course though it seems on ebay some coins seem to trend. I bought some G/VG Barber quarters where the Gs were better dates for melt. That was odd to be able to get I know what you mean about people on ebay overpaying for some things. I saw that "XF Details" coin sell for $305. Do those sales of the XF40 coins include shipping charged? You know some offer free shipping where some overcharge to cover overhead.

Does anyone know why 1893 CC Morgans are listed as at a higher premium even though 1893 coins have a lot lower mintage. Mintage on 1893 is 377,000.
