Here's a recent ebay purchase. What grade would you call it? It's definitely got hairlines from an old cleaning, so I think it would be wasted money and effort to send it to PCGS. Maybe I should try ANACS on this one.

I would appreciate your comments. Thanks everyone!

It's right on the line, but I'll go with F-12.

I think I see a faint I in LIBERTY. The hair detail is more consistent with VG, but I think, overall, I'd say F-12 details.

I agree; you've got enough for F-12 details.

I would grade VG-10 harshly cleaned.

So, I decided the hairlines and general look of my 1912-S nickel were starting to bother me. I took it to the Visalia show yesterday and a local dealer took it in trade towards a better coin:

I've never had one of these before and decided it was about time. This one strikes me as a choice, no-problem VF coin. What do you all think?

I was checking the PCGS guide to Counterfeit Detection to make sure that my new cent had the diagnostics of a genuine coin (it looks like a good one ). I found out something interesting: the 1912-S nickel used the same mintmark punch as the 1909-S VDB cent! If you compare the mintmarks in my photos you can see the close resemblance. It strikes me as quite a coincidence that I happened to use this nickel as a down payment on that cent!

Look real to me but the color seems a little off. Maybe cleaned or dipped at one time ?
