I think you have a great plan.
I would add -- a nice thank you note. Even if you said thank you in person, a nice hand-written note means a lot. (Examples can be found online.)
Since your relative was a collector, I would expect that the coins were searched, and searched ... but you never know.
After you search a year, you might consider sorting them by approximate grade (10, 20, 30, etc.) and keep separate any coins that are still red/brown.

That comes to about..lets just call it 11 bags ( 5000 each). I have worked as a coin sorter for a couple of "big boys". At 8 hours a day, I could easily sort through 3/4 of a bag, or just about 4 bags a week. Do yourself a favor and get a box of coin tubes and set them up one tube for every year and mintmark from 09 to 39. Put your basic coins in each tube. Keep your really nice ones out in a seperate pile. Have a cup set aside for "second lookers". Do those at the end of the day, so you don't get bogged own. Don't be afraid to throw one in their. Easier to look at it again than think about later. Keep a cup for toned coins, another for rpms, and still anotehr for rpms, ect. Keep another bag for culls. Understand if you wholesale these that Littleton et al will send back your entire order if they find culls. The wholesale bag price is 3 cents a coin 40 to 58 LWC P and D. S mints are five cents a bag. Other coins are per roll. No one buys culls unless it is a key. Oh, and keep a bag for your steelies, but be aware that ANY RUST makes them a cull. Good luck! |

You might skip the sorting by decade step and just go directly to the date and MM step, to avoid an additional handling step, at least for the more common years (1940s to 50s). Consider using egg cartons to put each date / MM as they get separated, until you have enough for a roll of the date/ MM. You will likely discover some really common dates/ MM, so these might need baggies. Memorize the key dates/ MM, and put those aside immediately on discovery. Also any in exceptional condition for the date should go directly into a holder.
But you really need to think of an efficient, organized process and plan including what you plan to do with them afterwards. That might affect the sorting process.

More power to you and everyone else with the patience for this. Even if you could average 10 seconds per coin with breaks and distractions just separating by decade, that's 147 hours - 2 hours a day for two and a half months. I'd be really tempted to cash it in for the $530 and go buy a bunch of coins that I actually wanted.

I want tio thank everyone for their helpful advice and encouragement. I just finished sorting a small container by date and mint mark. I wanted to get some idea what was in the containers. Grand total for is 1241, On just a quick scan of the coins I found the following. 1943- Farthing 1902-Indian Head 2 lamination errors 12 RPMs 1 possible DDR. After I take photos of the error coins, I plan on posting them and several of the RPMs on the error portion of the forum. Not bad for a quick scan! |

For those interested my first two bags had some nice coins. A few lamination errors and a fair number of RPM. The third bag yielded the following:So far! Indian head cent-27 LWC 1909-1 LWC 1909 vdb-5 LWC semi-key dates 1910S-1 1911S-2 1912S-1 1913S-3 1914S-1 1915S-1         I'll post pics of the other coins latter. Any idea of approximate grade for these? Thank you for looking. |

Thanks ammcollect. These coins allowed me to fill 6 holes in my collection. Now I only need 5 more ( the most difficult and expensive ones to buy) to complete my Lincoln set.

That's a very awesome gift! I don't know your relatives health situation but I'd suggest trying to take them out to dinner, a movie, or something else they enjoy to show appreciation. They must think a lot of you to hand over such a prized collection!

The 1910 S looks around XF40 to me. 11S VF20, 11 G06, 12S VF30.
