Is 1983 D Lincoln Memorial Cent / LMC 2.66gram A Weight Tolerance For Zinc?

oyaji New Member United States 46 Posts	Posted 08/09/2018 03:02 am I found this 1983 D LMC weighing 2.66grams each time I put it on the scale. I am aware that Zinc has a +/- 0.10grams tolerance meaning a weight limit of 2.40gr to 2.60gr. However, mine keep reading at 2.66grams each time I place it on the scale. Any thoughts besides dirt accumulation? Report this Post to the Staff

Halo1st Pillar of the Community United States 2775 Posts	Posted 08/09/2018 11:54 am Reference I'm using shows, +/- .13 grams, (1873 - 1982) for copper/bronze. same tolerance for the 1943 zinc-plated steel cents. +/- .10 grams, (1982 - present) for copper-plated zinc. Any foreign substance on coin can add on to weight. Can't tell in the current images whats on the coins surface. Maybe dirt, stained or toned. If surface is clean and scale is calibrated, maybe possible planchet evolved from a slight rolled thick stock or a bit heavy on the copper plating. Thanks, Doug. When you find a cent that is .4 grams out of tolerance then people will start to take notice. Report this Post to the Staff
