Hi, I was just curious if lamination errors can occur on proof coins. I have never seen any and I'm having a hard time finding images of any. Are they any different from normal laminations?

Yes they can happen on any coin planchet. Proofs usually don't have them as they are meant to be presentation coins and the planchets are checked over more carefully, but that is not to say they don't ever get out, I've seen a few (mostly late 1800 dates) don't really see many in modern coinage, yet a bad planchet can always sneak through in any year I suppose.

You can see quite a few yourself at Heritage (www.ha.com) just do a search for lamination error, then using the side bar I selected proof coins in the past sold coins the results came up with 9 coins from two/three cent pieces to modern Kennedy half dollars and Proof Silver Eagles.

I don't recall seeing any of the proof coins having a lamination issue. (I will be watching for these on the threads for future use is any come up)

I consolidated my ha.com search to US coins and "lamination" only then filtered the description to show proof under "coin finish" sub menu, this time I was returned 36 items in past auctions. Some really neat looking coins that have been sold over the years. Many patterns, more than I would have thought, maybe this says something about not taking as much care when working on coins not going to the public, but being used around the mint as show pieces for what engravers and apprentices could produce. (guessing anyways).

Sale#1219 CSNS 2015 Lot #8987 a 1776-1976-S 50C Silver Proof Kennedy half dollar w/ Reverse Lamination NGC PR64 Cameo is one of my favorites, spectacular for an error proof. It sold cheap IMO too! @ $493.50 I know it's not exactly what I collect nor classic but WOW. Many of the laminations on proof coins are small or around the rim from the few I've found looking around now. Definitely proof laminations are an interesting type of error and worthy of collecting.

I was wondering the same thing yesterday. I will check out the ha.com site to view. I was told I had a proof coin 1950 Lincoln Cent by a dealer, but was unsure after a discussion on here yesterday. I will most definitely seek further guidance from a former professional grader I know.
