A few months ago I reported finding what I believed to be a new variety for the 1874 Seated dime, one which has only one arrow prominent. I cherrypicked it off of a Teletrade auction on that basis. Furthermore, it was my belief that this coin employed the same obverse die as the extremely rare Fortin-106 (F-106) variety, one which has both arrows around the date almost completely obliterated. There are currently only three known examples of F-106.

Just-Made-A-New-Seated-Dime-Variety...

Anyway, I sent this coin to series specialist Gerry Fortin, and he just confirmed this coin as a new variety, F-114. It is believed to be an early die state of F-106, and probably paired with a different reverse than F-106. Though this is currently the only attributed specimen of F-114, Fortin has initially assigned the variety an "R6+" rarity level to stay on the conservative side (presumably until more time for others to come out of the woodwork has passed). That would equate to a "best guess" of perhaps 10-20 of these out there somewhere.

I never thought I'd make a discovery coin. This is cool stuff!

Through this Sunday (May 28), you can read a lot more about this find at http://www.seateddimevarieties.com, which is Gerry's Seated dime Varieties web site where he has written up a lot of information about this coin. Access is free and unlimited through Sunday and you can use the "free login" provided on the home page.

WOW[:0] That is awesome! I think it would be every collectors dream to find a new die pairing or variety. Is it possible for you to get it slabbed with the attribution?

Not yet. I don't think any of the slabbers are attributing Seated dimes by variety yet. As variety collecting takes off in more and more series, it may happen some day, but we're not there yet.

Besides, I rather like it raw in my Dansco album. :)

Thanks. Gerry Fortin is currently the authority on Seated dime Varieties, building on the solid work of Kam Ahwash and Brian Greer. As I said, Gerry has listed this coin as a new variety and I am given ample credit as the finder and owner of the discovery coin for this variety. He also notes that the plate coin for the F-114 variety is courtesy of my collection. Pretty exciting stuff for someone who never thought his name would be in a definitive numismatic reference for a coin series!

You, sir, are the man.

Congratulations, and I hope your stay in the deserved glory for having been the first is a long one.
