TomM:
I don't consider any Roosevelt dime to be a key date. Except for 1955, the coins struck at the San Francisco mint have lower mintages each year than the coins struck at the Denver or Philadelphia mints. So it is always pleasing to find a Roosevelt dime with an S mintmark. The lowest mintages of this series are the 1949-S, and 1955 dimes struck at all three mints.

Yes, the 1949-S and all three 1955 dimes are the dates I'm referring to. They have always been difficult to find in circulation (according to my father, who searched for them in the 1950s).
Were any of those in the roll you found?

I examined the coins in the roll. It contained two key dates --1949-S and 1955-S. This roll contains so many different dates and mintmarks that I think it is a blend of coins from a Roosevelt dime collection, plus a large number of uncirculated 1963 and 1964 dimes that later were added to the coins removed from an album.

Wow! That's a pretty good roll, NorthShoreMA. Definitely must be from someone's collection to have that many low-mintage and San Francisco dates on the east coast.

So far I've found 5 silver Roosevelt dimes, 1 80% Canadian dime and one silver Washington this year. Not a bad start.

After a rather inauspicious start to 2026, the last few weeks have seen a big improvement as silver dimes go. For the past 4 weeks I've averaged 4 silver dimes each week, with last week being the slowest. Luck visited today with my favorite teller giving me 6 CWR that she held since my last visit and 4 of them were loaded with silver to the tune of 43 Roosevelts and a pair of Mercs. 45 silver dimes added to the pile! Notably only one addition to our circulation-only album: a 1952 S. But there were several upgrades and a bunch of lively toners making me wonder if there's someone out there wondering who emptied their dime album for gas money.
