In a few years I may consider selling my Lincoln collection (or maybe not). My goal is to have all 1909-1958 in EF+ brown for commons and semi-keys, and the keys in varying grades (certified). 1959-Present will be all BU Red. As of now I love my Lincolns and it's going to be a great sense accomplishment when its completed. But in a few years, if for any reason I want to redirect my investment, say, to another coin interest or otherwise I might consider selling. I don't mean to sound braggadocios by my Lincoln collection is much more complete (with the Keys) and in much nicer grade/eye appeal than the sets I've seen on ebay. If I ever did want to sell it am I better off selling them individually (what a head ache!), or can I reap true market value as a completed set? So long as, at the time, I get fair market value for the individual coin values I'm happy.

I've never sold any coins, so I'm certainly no expert; but everything I've seen indicates that complete sets seem to sell for the value of the keys only. From what I can tell, selling complete series sets, or proof sets, or commemorative sets realize more money if sold as individual coins.
It doesn't seem right to me, but it's the way it is.

I agree, for the buyer, its better to purchase the complete set. When it comes to selling, you may want to sell each coin individually.

From what I've heard you can get more if you sell individually.

As a seller, I like to purchase sets, then I get to part them out, and " cherry pick " them as I see fit.
If I were selling my set? One by one absolutly for best money, as a set for quickest money.

I think if you put a reserve on your set so you can get what you at least have in it or the minimum you want to feel like you aren't hosing yourself is about the only way to do the complete sets, if you plan on going that route. I am getting ready to venture down that road on Tuesday when I list a 41 coin 19th/20th century VF+ Type set...and yes it will have a reserve.

I don't know how people could sell there own coins...I can't even think about selling mine! I must have some sort of hording disease or something. In the future, rather than selling off your whole collection I would sell all of the common ones and keep the keys and a few others as stand alone coins. Then if you truly need the money for your other collection, I would sell the keys.
